LUKE_O Apr 17, 2006 10:42 PM

hi,
I was just wondering do veiled chameleons need a uvb light source? the pet store that sells the chameleons dont use them.
Also, can i keep a baby velied chameleon and a baby red eyed tree frog togther(an idea i got from the same pet store.)i have one of those tall exo terra tanks. i keep my RETF 83 degrees at day at night and around 64 at night.the humidity is70-80%

Gotta love the Pet Store version of husbandry. lol. Long story short....dont do it buddy. Chams definately need UVB. At least a 5.0... and he'll probably make very short work of your tree frog.

Check out the caresheet section. There is one on veileds. Although i've not read it, I'm sure it has some good pointers for beginners.

Good Luck!

thanks so much the only reason i say this is because the owner of the pet store had a tank with a juvy veiled, a whites treefrog, and a red eye together for about 6 years

Did he just recently put the veiled in with the rest of the animals?? You said he was a juvy....and I'm assuming his addition was recent due to the smal fact that they're only juvies for so long.....and 6 years is a bit long for a veiled to be a juvy. lol.
If he is a recent addition, and the other frogs are full grown, chances are he wont mess with them until he grows up a bit. But if I were that owner...I may be worried about a full grown whites trying to eat my veiled!! Those things are ridiculous. They'll eat anything they can fit in their mouths. Crazy little jaba the hut type creatures they are.

They are being idiots because of their lack of communication skills and intelligence to respectfully tell you; No, it is not right to house chameleons with other animals, unless you are giving them, "Zoo Caliber" cages. Entire rooms for them and the other animals.

The common keeper, and even advanced keepers, cannot provide this. Therefore it has become a very Taboo thing to do.

CANADIAN CHAMELEONS

I don't recommend keeping any other lizard in with a chameleon. Mixing species can lead to problems (besides the possibility of one eating the other).

I wouldn't buy a chameleon from a store that doesn't keep them properly (UVB and all) either. They could already be on the road to MBD or other health issues.

Just my own opinion.

The whole "tank" idea is not a good enclosure for your veiled. Baby Veiled appear to d fine in tanks, as Kinyonga has mentione often, but at around 4 months a Veiled should be in an enclosure with much more air flow than a tank will provide. Diane
