Male or female? (pics)

phiber_optikx Apr 18, 2006 12:04 AM

I know I could just probe, but I am trying to keep the stress down for a few weeks. Judging by the tail which do you think it is? For those of you who can't tell the vent is the first yellow mark. It almost looks like an "X" in the pics.
I know this belongs in the ratsnake forum but you guys seem to be better at judging and respond quicker.

Black rat snake is pictured. It would do no good comparing the tails of Hope and Shadow (may be a name change soon) because even if they were both full grown and were both female Shadow would still be about 4x Hopes size and girth AND the tail lenth is probably 3x that of a corn.

it's not lampropeltis. It's a black ratsnake (Elaphe obsoleta obsoleta) It would be nice of Onyx turned out that big though! I tried to probe today but am REALLY unsure of the results. It probed around (probably UNDER) 1/4" I am unsure if I just wasn't hitting it right or what but that seems a short distance even for a 4' female. Also there was no "dead stop" it seemed a little bouncy. I know that is not a deciding factor but it does throw me off a bit.

On second thought I guess that makes it female. Because it shouldn't go more than 1-3 subcaudal scales which is about 1/4" at the deepest. So I guess you all lose and it's a she
