I know I could probe but am trying to keep the stress down for a few weeks. Any opinions? The vent is the first yellow spot that almost looks like an "X"

I can't tell from that photo. Bill may be right about it being a female. Here is a link to a page on Kathy Love's site on Rat Snake sexing. I think that probing is the only way to know for sure unless you find them in the act.

Did your snake just come out of cooling? I just warmed up a pair myself about two weeks ago. I am still waiting on the female to shed. Let me know if you need a mate for that snake. I have two York Co. Black Rats. I am hoping that I have a male and female from looking at their tails, but I am going to probe them to be sure.

It is a wc so it was "naturally cooled" I probed it today but am very unsure... It probed MAYBE a 1/4" if that. Wouldn't a 4' female be deeper than that? I was thinking that maybe somehow I missed the right opening but couldn't find anything else.... It is just as tame as any of my cb which surprises me since it has only been captive for 1 week. It gets its first meal tomorrow. I am interested to see how agressively it eats. My last wc black rat (6'1" was a rat wrecker and amazing to watch!.

On second thought, the probe was accurate. It should only go 1-3 subcaudal scales on a female. So the probe results make perfect since. Don't know why that didn't make sense before... slow day! Congrats it's a girl

So, are you planning to breed her? She is a fine looking Black Rat.

I was able to get my rescue WC Blacks to take F/T mice with no problems by moving the mouse about in front of the opening to the hide. Both snakes eat like champs.

I think she will take f/t just fine. I fed her today but she wouldn't take it at first (the mouse jumped right on her head and freaked her a little) so I killed the mouse and left it in the cage. The mouse is gone now. I would love to breed her but don't have a male on hand. Next year she will be bred to my male orange albino. I would breed her this year but don't have a male and don't have anywhere great to keep the offspring. With my luck I would get 20 eggs and no buyers!

It's easy to tell males.
They will aimlessly cruise around their cages all day and never stop to ask for directions.
(My wife made me add that.)

thats funny b/c my male just chills ont he sofa and watches tv drinking a beer.... no really, my male is really lazy. when i go to feed him a rat he barely picks his head up.... lazy butt. but i love him regardless!

I see enough taper right after the vent to make me think female, but there sure is a LOT of tail left after the vent, so that makes me second guess it. If I was betting, I'd say female.
