Caging together Nigel and Navi

nymph Apr 18, 2006 12:09 PM

I was just wondering if it would be possible to keep Nigel and Navi together beyong age 4 mos if the cage is big enough, and I have a slot for the colored plexiglass to just slide in between to seperate the enclosure into two sides if they do seem to be stressed or have a problem, or is it better to just keep it into two sides from four mos????? Thanks!

I can't remember what species they were or even if they were male or female for sure. I'll assume they are veileds or panthers. If they are a male and female, they will likely try to mate as soon as they are sexually mature if you leave them together. Do you really want to put the extra calcium/nutritional demands of making fertile eggs on your female who won't likely be full grown herself? If you do, she could end up with MBD.

In addition to that, I have seen pairs of chameleons kept together before, even two females, and one always ends up going down hill and dying if not separated in time. The stress is somewhat silent....you might not notice it until its too late. It might be possible in a very very big cage (how big is your cage?)...but do you want to risk it?? Do you want you female to constantly be stressed having to keep her eye out for the male? They shouldn't even be able to see each other if you want to keep the stress levels as low as possible (which in turn affects the immune system).

Just my opinion. I've been keeping chameleons for over 15 years.

Thank you. Yes they are veileds. One male and one female. I was thinking that it would be an issue if they tried to mate to young. I do not want that. I wasn't sure if they would do that or not. Anyway, I think that I will go ahead and seperate them instead of keeping them together. Nigel is about 2 and a half months. She is three weeks older than him, so can they stay together for another month?? Or is that to close?? Thanks.

I would go ahead and separate them. You will need to in a month or so anyway, so plan to do it before it becomes a stress issue. The two cages can share some lights or a misting system if you put them side by side with a visual barrier between.
