Salmonella

I've been reading this forum for quite some time.
Now I think it's time for me to post. I need your oppinions, maybe there is even someone who had same problems.

I've bought a pair of yellowhead collareds in september. They were both doing well, but before hibernation male got some kind of eye-infection. I had no idea if it was sand impact or some kind of bacteria. Because it didn't go away I took it to the vet. I must tell that in our country there is no vets that have much experience with lizards. Anyway I got some eye drops, that helped a little but didn't do much.
At the end of december I had to put them into basement for hibernation.
When I woke them, 2 months later, male still had problems with it's eye. Most of the time it was closed, when it was open it didn't look too good.
So I went to vet again, now they took a sample from the eye for the lab tests. Meanwhile I got another eye-drops (minimum efect again).
Finally I got the results from the laboratory. They found salmonella in the eye. I got some oral solution and now is one week of antibiotics.
But I also read that salmonela is somewhat common with lizards and usually not a problem. Usually...

My collareds are still young and I want them to have a happy life,so and any oppinions, ideas or recomendations are welcome.

Hi, nice to have you here Your yellowhead youngster is very pretty ! Your guy had a bacterial infection in his eye. Sometimes when they can not open the eye, it goes hand and hand with a resp infection, so be glad it's not that.

As far as the salmonela (SP.)don't know if thats right or not, you always read about it, and the smartest thing to do is to keep hands washed after touching your lizards, frogs , turtles. I have never had a problem with it, as many keepers will tell you it's not really a problem if your careful.

Bacterial infections , some anyway especially to the eyes probably can be avoided somewhat by keeping the tank really clean, picking up excretment , disgarding often. I wip the basking area down atleast once a day in all my tanks but sometimes more. I use slate , so it's easy to clean.

Also clean, fresh water is improtant, they sometimes eliminate in the water , and will continue to drink, this can not be good, and I'm sure can cause bacterial infections too.

Just cleanliness, good food, suppliments good lighting/ care, help keep them healthy, but things crop up now and again as we all know. Just DO YOUR BEST

Hey, stick around and keep the pretty pics coming!

Hi!
Thanks for response. I try to keep my tank as clean as I can. They always have clean water for drinking (though they don't drink a lot).
Female looks fine, also I noticed some improvement with male. I think time will tell.

Really excellent pic, pretty kids !

As far as the tank, we can keep them as clean as we can, but if they step in or lay in what they had just done, and then another lizard rubs his face there, then ya can have bacterial /eye infections ya know?

Stuff we can't even see I'm sure Hope he continues to perk up!
