Do you ever stop and wonder what the neighbors think? (long)

JM Jul 29, 2003 11:08 PM

Okay, so I don't advertise to my neighbors that I have a housefull of snakes, rats and mice. I keep it pretty hush-hush actually.

BUT~ The drive-way is the most convenient place to drain the pans I breed mice and rats in after I clean them. So, EVERY Monday I stand out in my yard scrubbing between 8-10 cat litter pans and at least 5 large cement mixing bins, then I drain them on the drive-way. Never really thought much about it, no one can see the rats or mice from the drive-way.....just the pans I am cleaning out. No big deal right?

So~ EVERY Monday for almost a year now the same lady walks past my house pushing a stroller, and every Monday we both smile and nod at each other as she strolls by. So yesterday, I noticed she didn't walk by as usual. I thought about it for a while, and thats when I realized.........

LAST Monday......I'm standing out there cleaning 8 cat litter pans when she walks by, and she asked me how many cats I have. Without thinking I answered "One.....why.....is he out?!?!" and then I started looking for my cat. (Okay, he is a mean cat, he bites. A lot. Hard. People have called the cops on this cat so I was really worried!) So after a while I found my cat, in the house.....he's fine.

WHAT is this lady thinking?

"Honey~ You know the cat lady down the street? Yeah, the one that is always cleaning a LOT of cat litter pans in her driveway? Yeah, today I asked how many cats she has.........she claims she only has one cat in there, and then she went all nervous and panicy about where that cat was..........."

I should expect a visit from the humane society and the DEA any time now huh?

Yeah, I occasionally wonder if any of the people in my building see me often enough to notice that my pet carriers are always full when I come in and empty when I leave?

Baahahahaha!!! That is the funniest story I've heard in a while. Lol....Our supplier for feeders sends the mice and rats home in those little white chinese-food take-out boxes. So, every friday, I come home with 3 boxes of "Chinese" food and a bag of crickets. Let them wonder. :D

Arn't crickets good luck in China? hehe...
Any way... crickets and meal worms are all i need to feed so i don't think my neighbots have the slightest clue as to what is going on.

I just recently started breeding my own rats for my blood python. She's eating small rats, so i have to go outside for a nice um, hard surface. anyways, i go walking out one day with a box and pillowcase in hand. I proceed to take care of business. After 2 good whacks the rat was done, i peak in to make sure it's dead, then turn around to go back inside. well, i look up and there is my neighbor and her friend just STARING at me. I freeze, think about what just happened, laugh about it, give them a wave, and head inside with my pillowcase. keeps me laughing everytime i think about it.

mmmm, more please!

That is the funniest thing I ever heard!!

That was a funny story. Thank you for sharing.

But maybe after a year of stroller, the baby is now walking on his own. So maybe that is why you don't see the stroller lady anymore. I am a man and I don't know nothing about babies, but a year is a long time to be using a stroller. I would guess Maybe the child is now walking and probably stopped needing the stroller anymore.

Anyways, I liked your story.

cheers.

what the neighbors would say if they knew we had a hundred or so giant hissing roaches and various other bug food in the closet - one pantry for us, and that is the pantry for the herps.

have you ever answered a knock at the door to find a group of 4-6 complete strangers asking if you would mind letting them see your herps? I Have! LOL!! I moved to a town of 2300 just 21 months ago and since then I have been interviewed for articles in both local papers and had a cub scout den over for a tour and talk.

I own an antique store and some of the local herpers buy mealworms from me when they can't make the 1 hour drive to the nearest pet shop. The other day I was telling one of my herp comrades how to start a colony of mealworms with the 500 mealworms I was selling her. All the while I was talking there was an older lady waiting patiently behind my herper, who's young son was taking out worms and playing with them, with an item she wanted to purchase. She didn't say anything and no funny looks but I have to wonder what she must have though! She wasn't a local as we get a heavy flow of tourists through our little town. Can you imagine going antiquing and running across someone buying insects and letting her little boy play with them! LOL!!
