Garter eating a Salamander?

Matt Harris Apr 18, 2006 09:11 PM

Saw this eastern garter tonight in the Hudson Valley. Not sure what he was eating, but maybe a spotted salamander?

Snake looks like a typical adult... Probably somewhere around 2'?

If so... Then it was most likely eating a spotted salamander... Not too many other salamanders around that would cause that much of a bulge. Maybe a large spring, red or mud salamander.

Judging by the tail tip color, I'd guess Spotted. Yeah, the snake was an adult...a little over 2' I'd say, though the last third of it was buried in the leaves.
