Recreating - just a line of thought

Buzztail1 Apr 18, 2006 10:33 PM

So the Suwannee King and the Blotched King have been relegated to intergrade of Eastern and Florida Kings status.
I wonder if anyone has interbred Eastern and Florida Kings and come up with anything like these two spectacular animals.
I would be interested in hearing what the breeders have to say about this and, of course, seeing any pictures.

(I agree with you): NOPE . . . Mother nature has the ONLY true Suwannees & Goini's! Can't copy em' at home!
Here's a wildcaught, adult male, TRUE blotched, (from near Tallahassee):

I dunno Karl, maybe if we could use kings from all around the periphery, mix the lines just right, and take about a hundred thousand years? we could come up with something.....
There are some in the hobby now with remarkable similarities though. What I have not seen, though there may be a few, are patternless "homemade" snakes from a getula X brooksi.
It's kinda funny when you think about it. We're never satisfied with what mother nature has put here. (I have not seen an "improvement" on a normal cornsnake for instance)
One of the crosses that I do not personally like is the "goini" X "brooksi". However I guess it depends on what morph/pattern of either is used. So many variables...
Most I've seen are not anything special IMO.
I hope to actually hunt the elusive "Suwanee" king soon.
I'd love to get a picture of a wild king from the area.

Mark,
Please don't misunderstand me.
I am not intending for anyone to go out and start breeding just to try to recreate any specific morph.
Heck, even my Prairie Kings are normals and not albinos.
I am just saying that if the taxonomists are right about those two "intergrades" not being valid subspecies, then shouldn't that be recreatable?
Just wondering,
Karl

Oh, I didn't misunderstand your post, Karl.
I was just pondering "out loud" so to speak and hypothetically as well.
I have been wondering who may have any/both of the "ssp." we're talking about. I had also hoped some would post pics....
I like looking at pics ya know...
Of course, we haven't touched on the subject of meansi yet!

FWIW I go by Roger Conant - the original and ultimate authority.

It particularly irks me that these biochemists want to go around renaming snakes based on their theories about mitochondrial DNA. Meanwhile, totaly trashing the work of true herpetologists, like Conant, who took the time and effort to categorize our native snakes in a systematic and logical manner useful to people in the field.

"Pantherophis" my ass. They woudn't know a ratsnake if it bit 'em.

My 2 cents...
