Hi!
I was wondering if anybody has every tried putting a leash on their crested? My boyfriend really wants to let him run around in the grass outside when it gets warm enough but I'm wary. I don't know if it's a good idea or not.

Can ants hurt them?
What about just setting up a little area that is closed off? It seems like he would like the outdoors because he is so curious. He's also really calm and tame (if that counts for anything)
I don't think there are any leashes small enough for a crested gecko. Nor do I think letting them walk around on the grass a good ideal. Geckos for one thing, are arboreal so they are more likely to climb the first verticle surface they come across and they can climb very fast when they put their mind to it. If you want to bring your crested gecko outside, build or buy a screen reptarium to keep him in while outside. This way they are safe from injuring themselves, escaping or being eaten by a passing bird, dog or other animal big enough to eat a 8" lizard.
Ants shouldn't be a problem as long as they are not investing the area you want to bring your gecko out. Fire ants are very dangerous so if they are common in your area, best to keep your crested gecko indoors. Also, make sure they don't eat wild insects, as these could contain insecticides or could be harmful if eaten by your crested gecko. I do know fireflies are toxic to bearded dragons, not sure if they are to crested geckos but best to avoid them anyway.

Thanks for the input- by the way - would the temp outdoors be an issue for them? I live in michigan and now that it's spring it seems to about 70 degrees at the hottest point of the day. With a little wind it can get a little bit more chilly.
I'm a little confused... Cresteds are a nocturnal lizard & to get them outside at a time of day where temps in the north would be comfortable for a crested, you would have to either wait until the dead of summer, or wake them up in the middle of their sleeping period... To take them out in the middle of the day, or into the sun would probablly make your crested very uncomfortable (if you're used to seeing in very low light, a bright sunny day would hurt your eyes).
They do have tiny leashes at Petco & other petstores... but they would be best used at night with your grecko.

(please don't take this harshly, it's just meant as an observation of a Crested's lifestyle)
