How to calibrate a thermometer( probe)

sacredpurr Apr 19, 2006 01:06 PM

OK now I am really confused as stated in the posts below about the incubator and different temp reading on 5 different therometers. I need to know what people think about the kinds of thermometers used. What type do you all use? Then here is whats in my incubator: One is the $1.97 white plastic frame thermometer you get at Walmart, one is a hanging style with a metal frame I think it came with the incubator I got used from my bro, one is the kind we use in aquariums for reptiles(which I have heard are not accurate) and two are the probe style( they look like the kind you would stick in meat for a reading) but ones I have are used for semi truck with reefers to make sure the trailer temps are correct. Which one should I trust since the temps are so different? Now on to calibration. My husband said for the probe style you put it into freezing water for 10 minutes, no mater what the reading are at that point(knowing the water is freezing) you take the bolt on the back and move it until it reads 32 degrees and tighten. Does this sound correct? I have never done this in my life and The probe types I am talking about have the highest reading in my incubator which is 90. The plastic one reads 80, the metal framed one reads 84 and the other one from an aquarium is reading 86. I hope you professional breeders out there will answer this. PLEASE!!!!! This will help everyone just starting out in the breeding business. Thank you, Deb
