Aggressive Hatchlings!

reptilicus81 Apr 19, 2006 01:09 PM

We picked up 3 05-06 females a few weeks ago...they are absoulte psychos! Any movements sends them into rapid fire strikes! I am assuming they were WC or CH because I have never experienced balls like this before. I feel so goofy using a hook for baby ball pythons! At least they are eating and were $35 each!

A hook for a ball python ???????
Handle them a little bit and they will most likely calm down.Probably only had there cages opened up to feed them so they are a little mad.Handle them a little if they bite so what its not going to hurt, they will soon learn that you are not out to hurt them and will calm down.

Yah these girls are in need of major social lessons. One is 150 grams the other two are 400 grams. I wouldn't care about the little one nipping me, but the big girls will grab on and not let go. They also hiss and caudal wag! So, a hook or gloves will be the way to go for the next few months!

i have an agressive het pied thats like that and i believe its due to not being handled and the only human contact is for feeding or water.... thats what the breeder thought too because i saw one i wanted and went to reach for it and he told me to be careful those ones bite lol Well a few months later it hisses when i open its bin but doesnt strike... unless i have a rodent in my hand or if the scent is in the air. Pretty snake bad attitude lol

i had an aggressive female.she was fine when i first bought her and one day i went to pick her up and she snapped at me.she did it for months.and since she was my fuirst snake,i didnt want toget bit.so i just let her strike.and i went to my dads friends house one weekend and i held a 4 ft bp and told my self that im not letting her bite me when shes this big so i just picked her up.and now shes fine
not sure why she chaged so fast or even why she was nippy but im happy shes not!
anyways..if they are hatchlings let them bite..they are small and once they relize that you wont back off if they strike they will stop.

I agree the bites aren't bad all things considered but I prefer taking a more aggressive approach. I put a towel or snake bag over their head and pick them right up before they push the bag off. Then making sure i have a light but firm grip near the head...in most cases they will tighten around your wrist and eventually they calm down and realize your not going to hurt them ... if they resist excessively i put them back in their cage and try another day

I am not too worried about them I too like the towel approach as they seem to be better once out of the enclosure. They certainly crack me up though. If you hang out in the reptile room for more than 15 minutes you are guarenteed to hear about 25 thumps...they are little burgular alarms! At least the dumerils I picked up that same day is as sweet as can be! That would be one loud thump!

I had an entire clutch come out like that last year.

As soon as I walked in the room they started striking the side of their tubs.

of the 7, 3 have totally calmed down, 2 are temper mental, and the other 2 bite me every chance they get.

They’re almost yearlings now (about 800-900 grams), they draw some blood, but it feels about the same as a cat's bite pain wise.

Maybe they will outgrow it.

okay in some species i heard of temperature effecting melanin...okay ... and the same page stated that the animals with higher melanin were more agressive.... think the problem was linked back to the incubation?............................. no time for spell check gotta go lol
