quick question on housing and room

hawiiangecko Apr 19, 2006 03:39 PM

hey,
i origonally got my account because of my leos but since then i've been on the boa forums lol. well my queston was con 4 leos fit in a 20 galon long with adequate hiding spots and heat? i have a Los Vegas het albino patternless male, albino tangerine, and a normal that have been housed with each other for about a year and a half to two years with no problems, i know proper husbandry, and i know the potential problems of bringing in a new one, but my question is can it be done?

Why don't you just buy another tank? You should quarentine any new additions anyway.

attacking me, arent you? well just so you know i had each in a separate tank for MONTHS(which i believe you call quarentine) then i introduced them SUPERVISED and i didnt just introduce them, then throw them in, i introduced them many times over a week and finally when i felt comfortable, let them together for the day, then so on. as i said i know proper husbandry, and i am not neglagent. i love my pets just as much as anyone else. so now i ask again, can i house 4 in a 20 long?

No I was asking a question. I think you put a lot more meaning behind what I said than the words that are there. I don't know the extent of your knowledge about geckos. When someone asks a question about doing something I don't sugest I ask why they want to do it. Then maybe I can give a better idea than what they were intending. NO you should not do this! This is BAD HUSBANDRY. Go to www.leopardgecko.com and order his book. It will help you with some of your problems.

well then i'm sorry i snapped at you like that. may i ask why this is bad husbandry and save 10.00? i've been keeping leos for years and they dont pick on each other, and are perfectly healthy. i origonally had 2 in the tank but put my female in a 10 gal and right away she stopped eating, and lost weight so rapidly she lost a quarter of her weight withen a week and a half. she was doing really bad and i really didnt want to take her to a vet. she was so stress proned right then that if i would have taken the trip, it would have killed her, so i took a HUGE chance(and i know it wasnt the best decision so dont repremand me for it) but i put her in with my male. 2 days later she was eating, and within a month she was noticeably healthier. my male who is 24/7 horny, never touched her, but they were always laying together. i tried to find a scientific reason for her losing wieght but i couldnt. i know deseases and virouses can strike that fast but from all i know, they cant stop that abruptly. from then on i kept them together. nd the other gecko was a smaller stunted gecko who was just tiny and the owner wouldnt take care of it so i monitered my geckos and it (introducing them like i said in my other post) and they never bothered it. there is no pecking order. i feed each off tweezers because the small one is half blind, my female is somehow isnt to great with picking up motion, and my male is a feeding powerhouse, so this way i know they are all getting adequate food. ohh, i also had my male and female together in the first place in hopes of breeding them but it never happened so i left them together. i'll try and get pics of them if you would like. my male looks like the pic of the gecko on the chair right before the subforums box when your first scrolling down to the forum. sorry we got off on the wrong foot, but for my geckos and how i'm housing them, i think its better off for them to be in one tank.

This is just my opinion so don’t take it the wrong way but not wanting to take your pet to the vet when it looses 1/4 its weight in a mere week and a half is not good husbandry, I don’t think a vet visit would have hurt as much as you think and I do think you got luck with her, That being said 4 in a 20G in my opinion once again is not a good idea. I can understand you wanting them in the same tank and it dose appear you know its probably not the best to house the females with the male year round "The longer it takes for something to happen the sooner it will happen" Its not a matter of if it is a matter of when, Remember I had this same problem with my Geckos and being housed together. The least you could do in my opinion is buy a larger cage to house the 4 in. I am not sure of the price range of your geckos but I am a keeper of boas as well and IMO if I can afford $150 X2 for my boas and $70 X2 for my geckos I sure as heck can afford an enclosure for the geckos

I do not post here much but I have somethings to say.... First, I agree 100% with WindyO, It would be a very bad idea to house 4 leos in a 20g.... One reason is that they WILL compete for food and they may fight eachother....

If your leo lost a quarter of its weight in a week and a half, there is something seriously wrong with that gecko and you MUST get it to a vet.....

I agree. Most of you will remember my Kirmy went without eating from 10-28 untill 12-23 however she actualy gained weight during this time 25.00G on 10/27 and 32.50 on 1128 Loosing that much weight that fast is not right, As I said he was lucky
