Broken latch. Escape.

Nisa Apr 19, 2006 04:58 PM

One of my snows is loose. I found the lid of her cage a bit off and the latch was broke. It might have broken when I put her up. I last saw her around 10pm on Mon. Found the cage empty around 9am Tue. I've been looking since then. I'm not sure that she'll come out for warmth or food. I'm looking around the edges of things and on things, but I'm worried that she got into the walls and I don't know if she'll come out. And in moving things I've found a snake skin that doesn't belong to one of my guys. I'm very afraid there is a native kingsnake here. I'm hoping it's another corn and doesn't decide to eat her for some reason. I hate this, I hate these clips, and I'm very worried.
I'll let you know if I find her.

i know this may sound a little silly, but several months ago my male degei got loose, i found him in the room his cage was in, it took me five hours of tearing the room up, after five hours i decided he got out of the house and i gave up and started cleaning the room up.....in the process i was putting a book back in a drawer, pulled the drawer all the way out by accident, and their he was hiding under the drawer......
what im saying is look in places "you know the snake couldnt get in"

Nisa Apr 19, 2006 07:05 PM

If it comes apart I've been taking it apart, if it'll move I'm moving it. Carefully of course. If I was pysically able I'd be taking the attic apart, but I just can't manage crawling across the rafters. I know it might take awhile to find her. It's the stress that's killing me.

My last escapee took a month to find. I have noticed, they generally wait for you to give them up as dead or gone and then they show up. Amazingly after all that time, she was in the same room. Of course for two weeks, I had a towel shoved under the door!
Good luck.
I found the best way to find escapees is to wait until dark and check the room every half hour. Most of mine don't come out until like 1am.

It seems thats how it usually works. I looked for mine for days, weeks all over but nothing . Than 3 months later while I was watching tv in the den he crawled right into the open and the chase was on.
He looked fine though he drank and ate that day . I now use those no escape safety tank clips.

Sorry to hear about this but, this what I do when I notice an escape.First,if possible, close the door to the room the snake was, then turn off the lights.Every thirty mins. or so walk in the room quietly and turn the light on,look around the room for a couple of mins. if you don't see him repeat this until you see him.Maybe I've just been lucky, but this has worked for me everytime. Good Luck! jeff

Luck has a LOT to do with it.... Peaches escaped once. I didn't even know it. Apparently my brother came in my room to use the computer and she was sitting happily on the keyboard.

How big is your snow? Do you have cats? If you do, keep an eye on them - they will likely find your snake first.

Try putting out a hide box with a pinky in it. Leave it along a wall or in a corner. If you can, try to make it easy to get in but hard to get out. I have read here on the forum where some folks use sticky traps to catch escapees, then free them with vegtable oil (this sounds risky to me). Also, leave a water bowl out - don't want him getting dehydrated.

Babys can get into the most amazing places. One baby was gone for a month. The cats found him - lucky I was able to rescue him before any fatal damage was done. That little guy spent some time in my wife's panty drawer - I know cause he left a present!

On the other hand, larger snakes are fairly predictable. I had a boffo big chain king who got out occasionally - each time I found him in the same closet coiled up amongst the shoes.

My sons hatchling gophersnake got out late last year, it was found about a month later on top of a mouse cage licking his lips in the same room

xblackheart Apr 20, 2006 11:31 AM

When I first started getting snakes, I had a few mice, and I kept them in the pet room, in a cage that was plastic, but had a bar/wire top. My first escapee ever was gone for about three days. I noticed the mice were not in their hide with the babies. They were all huddled in the opposite end of the cage. I openned it up and low and behold, there was my yearling stuffed with pinkies. She had eaten the whole litter, I think it was 6. She couldn't get back out through the slots between the bars because she was soooooo fat!! That was the first of Houdini's escapes.
Sometimes I think about keeping mice in the room, just to catch escapees!! lol.

I unfortunately have no live mice. Most of my guys eat F/T. Which I will admit that I tend to leave a few boxes from trying to get the new ball pythons to eat anything, including live, laying around, but haven't found her in any of them. I don't really have anything to keep a live one long term right now, may have to get something.

She's about 2' and 1 1/2yr old now. And she's acctually the one who got out before as a baby and was gone for 6 month last time. I do have a cat and I am keeping an eye on her, but she doesn't react to the snakes normally and is a bit unnormal for a cat. I'm just worried because now she's a bigger white target for something.

My first snake was a young Cal King, Wild caught. He got out once and my father found him in the cats mouth. The cat didnt hurt him at all, He was in fact very gentle with him and just walked around the house untill my father saw the snake in his mouth and put it back in the cage.

Hey, I'm pretty sure nearly everyone hear has felt what you feel right now, I myself am going through the same thing with a 6 month old corn, he got out of his tank, apparently it didn't get latched all the way...I tore up the room that day, then gave up searching, but always keeping an open eye, I had an amel motley(my first snake) get out pretty much a week after i got him, then i found him injured with a life threatening neck injury 6 weeks later, when one of the cats was going insane, and now that i don't have cats, i am a little more worried...I just know how long it can take, and have been sitting out food for him but nothing yet...hope things get better for ya
