Chyam and poor, burned Valentino

dianedfisher Apr 19, 2006 06:38 PM

Well, I haven't been posting much, but I have been reading your posts each evening. Everyone's chams are looking great. Cyrus is really growing and little Coconut is a doll. After seeing her future mate, I have to say she is one lucky little lady. So are Feenie's "poopies". I burned Valentino-badly-and Eric A. has been helping me deal with my mistakes. I never believed he could possibly survive, but he is one tough little guy. Today, both the boys (separately) had their first taste of outdoors. After Chyam bit me (ungrateful wretch that he is), I think he really enjoyed it outside. Valentino wasn't overly thrilled, but he had just been "buttered" up with silver sulfadine and wasn't particularly happy with his mommy. I'm sure we have a long road ahead of us.

Despite the burns inflicted on your little Veiled, He looks great. Amazing how tough those fella's are. Since he's only a juvenile, I would imagine that he would 'grow out' of his scars, somewhat.

Nosy be looks awesome too Gotta' watch your fingers, they go wild once they're outside...literally.

Does anyone know why chameleons get agressive when you take them outside? It seems to be common eneough that someone would have a hypothesis.

Wouldn't you become agressive if you put back in your homeland (Outside) and then picked up again to be taken back inside? Just a thought.

"How Important is Ultraviolet A (Blacklight)?
UV radiation is divided into UVA (longwave), UVB (midwave), and UVC (shortwave). Blacklights are a strong source of UVA. It has been demonstrated that UVA can influence agonistic, reproductive, and signaling behaviors in some species of lizards (Gehrmann, 1994A) as well as inhibit growth in female panther chameleons, Chamaeleo pardalis (Ferguson, et al., 1996). A UVA requirement for long-term health and reproduction of captive reptiles has not been demonstrated. However, because UVA is a component of natural light in many environments, e.g. deserts, appears to stimulate social behavior, and does seem to be nondetrimental even at high irradiances, some herpetoculturists may elect to use a blacklight in conjunction with some other visible light and/or heat emitting lamp."

"Second, low doses of UVA radiation can induce physiological responses in organisms probably by activating specific genes."

Man those little veileds can pretty much live through anything. I have a little guy that was born and bred by myself that also went through some major trama as a kid. At the time I had just bought a new house and had some issues with the door to the cham room. Long story short, the cats got in.....not good. Because of this...the door is now probably to secure. They nocked over 6 baby cages and ate 4 of my hatchling nosy's, and 2 baby veileds as well. When I found this guy on the floor.....downstairs.....a long way away from the cham room, he was twitching and barely alive. He was also missing half of his top jaw......literally. I had him peged for a goner.....but I warmed him up and over the coarse of the next hour he eventually started moving around. He was only 4 days old at the time so I still didn't think he'd make it. But alas....he did and is still alive and kicking to this day. He's roughly 8 months old now, and other than the face problem he's also pretty significantly stunted for his age. He's a small little guy with lots of problems....but he's got a ton of personality....and character for that matter. I call him predator....because he looks like the predator. lol. I've been meening to get some pics of him up. I'll have to do that tomorrow.

How did he get burned, if light was too close , how close? Just curious so it does not happen to others But I'm sure happy to hear he's doing so well and is a TOUGH DUDE, ehehhehe.

Seems he's got a good Mom/nurse to care for him. Thanks for the kind words about Coconut and Cadberry! Oh and the Poopies too

Your pic is very COLORFUL pretty kids!

I believe that I "cooked" Thraxxis, also and that it wasn't a skin infection at all. I guess my vet didn't recognize burn-blistered skin either and I had zero experience with burns. Eric A. suggested that I entertain the thought that it might be burns rather than a skin infection. I bought some really nice stainless steel 3 way fixtures from Big Apple that allow you to position your 10.0 compact fluorescent tubes lengthwise so that your herps get moe UVB exposure. Each of these fixtures also has 2 additional ceramic fitted incandescent light fixtures suitable for incandescent basking spots and ceramic emitters. I don't know if the stainless steel is just that much more reflective or these fixtures just allow the bulbs to be positioned a little lower than a traditional dome lamp or the fact that since Veiled require a higher basking spot I just made a bad choice (100 watt) in basking bulbs. It was winter and I also had a 60 watt mega-ray heat emitter in the other fixture. Ambient air temp was still only 77F and my IR gun showed temps around 90-100 under the basking spot. The mega-ray you can hold your hand under and it is not uncomfortable. I guess I've learned that the babies don't need the 100F like the adults do. "Experience is a hard teacher, but fools will learn no other way". Eric probably saved Chyam, also. I had the almost the same set-up in his cage, but his is 2 sides wood. So, I think all of the cages and husbandry issues are now acceptable, I just need to get my poor little guy to grow some new skin. His fool of a mommy is trying with all of her heart! Diane

A stupid mistake lead to my heat lamp falling on top of the cage, resulting in this a few years back. This was right after it happened, before it started to swell, crack and scab over (never got pics of that). About a half inch to an inch of skin around the black spots was also affected, but they didn't start to turn dark and scab up until a few days after this pic.

This is him form the past week. It looks like I was snapping his neck, but I wasn't actually putting presure with my fingers. You can see how the side and knee were scarred. Also, you can see there were lighter burns in the above pic that have healed, but the color isn't perfect. The skin seems to have healed almost completely in all areas, except the parts that were burned too deeply. The knee and the side were burned compeltely - all the skin was gone. the fact that some skin has regrown, AND regained its color changing ability, is amazing.

This pic shows how bad the burno n his knee was. It damaged much of the connective tissue, resulting in a slightly dislocated knee. Plus, the burns caused some nerve damage, and his rear legs aren't 100% anymore.
