Help I am trying to save a rescued gecko, but his health is quickly deteriorating

USNHM242 Jul 30, 2003 01:17 AM

I resently rescued a juvenille gecko that is refusing to eat. He is nothing but skin and bones now, I have already treated him for worms but to no avail. He looks worst and owrst each day and I am afraid that he will soon die. The vet said that he will die, but I don't want to give up on it yet. If anyone has any ideas on getting it to eat and putting weight back on or can recommend anything I would greatly thank you. Please help me.

I recently posted another message reguarding this same issue. There is a product that is called Jump Start that is a vitamin supplement and stimulates hunger. Its something to try. Its hard to save babies that are that far gone only because they dont have a fatty tail to live off of. Good luck

Geckos can be sick from many things other than worms. It is highly likely that this gecko has some kind of infection or other serious problem like impaction, most likely a bacterial or protozoan infection. Did it have runny stools? Unless you treat the illness, the gecko will not survive. If it hads crypto there is no hope and euthanasia is kindest, but it could also have someting treatable or curable, like coccidia or a bacterial infection. Have you tested for these problems? Unless you cure the underlying problem, something like jump start will only prolong the suffering.
