Closed eye (won't open)

micky-kennie Apr 19, 2006 07:11 PM

I have a leopard gecko that is about 7 years old that keeps one eye closed (started relativaly recently). She had a piece of unshed skin next to it, so I put her in a high humidity container for an hour and then got it off with tweezers, but she still is keeping her eye closed. When I put her in a high humidity contaner she'll open the eye back up and it doesn't look infected or anything. Should I be worried? Thanks.

It probably has a slightly scratched cornea. You may want to use saline drops to help it heal and watch out for an eye infection. If that happens, antibiotic drops should take care of it.

Would contact solution work? Should I put her into a high humidity container for an hour or two each day to help it, or would this serve no purpose? Thanks.

Contact solution might be OK (I have to admit, I used it when mine had the problem, just to get it flushed out promptly - with no ill effects.) A moist hide is vital... but a high humidity container might be a good idea if it's not going in there enough to begin with. I gave mine a warm water soak, carefully wetting the eye area, justt to keep it rinsed. Misting might also help, but they hate that

I wouldn't use any kind of human eye drops on your Leopard. I recently had a Leopard Gecko with some eye problems from a shedding problem and took them to the vet, they gave me an oinment to use on their eyes. The ointment only cost about $7. They as well as some very well know Leo breeders told me not to use anything on a Leos eyes that isn't made for their eyes. Human eye drops are not made for Reptiles.
