stupid question about rattlers and bullsnakes

phantoms Jul 30, 2003 01:24 AM

i was talking to someone online and they were convinced that in montana and possibly western nebraska that bull snakes were breeding with rattlesnakes. pretty sure there is no truth to that or that it is even possible, but wanted to have some other peoples opinions on that. basically, sounds like a myth to me

Old urban legend sort of myth. Perhaps it comes from the bullsnake's and ratsnake's habit of rattling their tails when disturbed?

i think most snakes can do this....i have seen milksnakes, rat snakes, garter snakes, and kings also do it

Cosidering that bullsnakes lay eggs and rattlesnakes give live birth...that should "throw a wrench" into that urban legend for most "snake knowledgeable" people.

They might also say that because other snake species , such as bullsnakes, hibernate in the dens with the rattlers... who knows why someone would say that... oh well...where did they get the idea milksnake sucked the milk from the udders of the cows just because the milksnakes were found in the barns and fields around dairy farms (maybe the farmers forgot about the food (ie mice) running around inside the barns)...

They couldn't hybridize because the young wouldn't know whether or not to hypontize you with their eyes or to roll into a hoop and roll away....

Definate myth but good luck trying to convince the believers.

...but the first generation is "het for venomous".

The second only grows ONE fang (usually the left).
