Second clutches

xblackheart Apr 19, 2006 09:01 PM

after a snake lays it's eggs, and you want to breed it again, when is the best time.
My females have looked nice and big after laying. I know sometimes a female will second clutch on her own. But if i wanted to introduce the male again, when do I do that? Should I wait until after the post lay shed? My females have been eating like gluttons since they layed.

I usually wait until after the post lay shed. If I intend on a second clutch from a female, I feed her a little extra. I will feed her one meal after the post lay shed and then put her in w/ the male the next day.

I never intentionally second clutch a female if it is her first year laying eggs.

There's no harm in introducing a male anytime after egg laying. The female will lay her second clutch on her own time table, not according to when she's bred again. I generally cycle males through female's cages once a week and leave them in overnight to give them "second chances" with females.

First, this is not an attack or a blast, just a question and your post made me think of it.

Other than proving or testing genetics that may be different from the first clutch do people double clutch. There are so many corns out there and so many sold to wholesalers, I was just curious. Again, I understand proving new genetics or trying new crosses to get something different, I am just questioning why some people double clutch for the sake of producing more babies.

I would imagine that some people want to have more to sell. The market where I am from is not saturated with corns like other places. I wanted to second clutch my Amel corn because I could not get a bloodred in time for her first clutch. The snake has some strange attributes that Kathy (not one of her snakes, but she commented on pics of it) thinks she may be an amel blood. So, she told me to breed her to a bloodred to be sure. I had to buy an adult male and it was not shipped to me in time. Sure, I could wait until next year, but as long as my snake is healthy enough for a second clutch, I don't want to.
I probably wont double clutch next year. And if the babies that I get this year don't sell, I won't breed at all. I am not going to keep breeding snakes that i can not find homes for.

I have several girls that will lay a second clutch every year whether they've been rebred or not. Those girls get rebred. I figure if they're going to put what reserves they have into producing eggs, I might as well get good ones.
