Rainbows-r-us I have a question for you:

phiff1 Apr 20, 2006 09:05 AM

I noticed on the cage forum that some of your cages have light bulbs inside them. I am shopping around for a new cage for my Carpet Python and was wondering if this kind of setup ever lead to a snake getting burned. Also, any thoughts on where to get a 48" tall cage for a python that really likes to climb?
Thanks much.

What can I say, that cage was built many years ago before I knew of the dangers of light bulbs. Not the recommended method of heating. My subsequent cages all heave belly heat.

That said, I've never had any problems with my snakes getting burned on the lights. They've never shown an interest in climbing up there. They get all the climbing they want in the outer tubes

Humidity is not much of a factor with my carpet python so it sounds like it might be okay for me to get a cage with light fixtures inside the cage... I am trying to avoid having any mesh on the top for the snake to rub its nose on but I really want heat up top as I like to see the snake perch. Do you think I could put a heat panel on the inside roof of the cage?
(sorry that this post digresses from BRBs)

I've heard the caging people rave about RHP's (radient heat panels) but also hear they are pricey. They could hook you up with all the right details.

Don't appologise, we're all here for the same reason....love of herps.

Phiff,
...You might want to consider a ceramic heat emitter as a lower cost alternative to the heat panels. I have kept Jungle Carpet Pythons in several different types of cages. I am not sure what style is best for them. I had them breeding and producing lots of good eggs when kept in old style low 48x24x18 melamine box style cages and also in smaller 40 gallon breeder tanks with screen tops.

Man my West Papuan sure goes to town on the lid of her cage. I pretty much have the problem solved in her current set up but don't want her to hurt herself again on this bigger cage that I am thinking about getting. Thanks for the suggestion.

Be sure to control the heat emitter with a proportional thermostat or a dimmer switch. Like nearly all the heating products we use these things are way too hot on full 120 volt AC house current.
