Green urates...(help)

fredsowner Apr 20, 2006 10:57 AM

Hi, I've only posted once before and I enjoy reading and seeing about the boas. I now need to ask for your help...
I bought a boa from a breeder and he shipped it to my house, everything seems fine except my boa has green colored urates.
Has anyone seen this in your boas before and what was the cause?
I will appreciate all and any help you might can give.
Thanks,
Fredsowner

Been eating leprechauns???

Seriously, never noticed green in my BCI's, have seen a bit-o-green in my BRB's. How much green are you seeing, just a little on one end or the other? Or all green?

Not solid green, just a little on the ends and mixed in the urates.

Sounds like what I've seen before on my BRB's.

Maybe somebody else will chime in?

And stop feeding leprechauns!

You say you seen it in your BRB's. Does it clear up and come back or do certain boas always have the green urates?
Thanks

only see it once in a while.

The green is caused by bile salts. Bile is produced in the liver, stored in the gall bladder, and expelled into the intestine. The snake may have liver disease, but more likely he's been on short rations. Totally green urates often show up when a snake hasn't eaten for a couple of months.

Makes sense, now that I think about it was more prevalant during gravidity and the BRB's were not eating.

That makes alot of sense. The boa is small for it's age and maybe it has not been fed as much as it should have. I plan on having a stool
check/up as soon as I can. I hope it is not liver disease and it will clear up as soon as it is eating better.
Thank you
