Housing question - rack dimensions

Canio Apr 20, 2006 11:59 AM

I was looking to buy a rack for my 10 geckos, and Boaphile Plastics seems to have good ones in their RhinoRaxx line. My question is about container space. The rack using sterilite 1752 containers (6 qt. 14 1/2"L x 8"W x 4 5/8"H) says for single adult geckos. This seems small to me. There is a rack with sterilite 1754 containers (15 qt. 17"L x 11 1/8"W x 6 3/8"H) which seems more the correct size.

Would the smaller container size actually work for adult geckos? Currently we have 5 adult geckos and 5 smaller ones. Which do you think would work best?

Pricing is about the same but the rack with the 1752 containers holds twice as many and the 1754 rack which would be useful if we got other geckos.

Thanks!

Jon

6 quarts would be a hatchling rack
15 would be an adult rack.

I use 12 quart sterilite containers in a melamine rack that I made myself. 12 quarts are fine for adults. They may seem small, but I haven't had any problems and my little friends eat really well. I know breeders that use 12 quarts to house all their single adults.

If you have some time and an electric drill, try making it yourself. Melamine is sort of heavy, but if you limit it to 6 tubs, its not so bad. I can lift mine with no problem, its about the size of a large cabinet or small dresser.

Hope this helps.

well bothe of those seem way to small to me, i use 32 qt sterilites to house my adults and sub adults. i also made mine myself. i have them stacked 9 high and i have two racks. i used an oak venier, i dont know how to spell that. i stained it black and it looks great. however it took a really long time to get the smell out but i didnt put a gloss on it which would have concealed the smell in 42 hours. the entire 2 racks including heat tape probably only cost arround $320 dollars. but they arnt easy to move but i love them! my geckos also love them and do very very well. i do have boaphile racks for my babies. i picked them up used for like $100 each.

I use 15 qt tubs for my adults which are all housed single. I will put the adults together and five minutes later theyt are finished and back into separate tubs. For my hatchlings I use 6qt tubs and they work fine until they reach about 30 grams. Oh and if anyone cares I found that ramekin dishes like the ones restaurants put butter in work great for bowls. Also small solo plastic sauce cups work well with some velcro on the bottom so they dont flip over. VELCRO who would have thought. Hereare pictures of my adult rack and hatchling rack. They all have belly heat and I have had no problem with them. These two racks with tubs and heat only cost about 350 dollars to make. Thats 20 adult tubs and 54 hatchling tubs. You decide whats best but making them is a lot cheaper and efficient than buying commercial ones.

Hi, Do you have pictures of how you did the belly heat? What did you use? I have heat tape and heat rope and I haven't decided how to install it so that its safe and will have the right amount of heat area for the geckos. Is that a special type of wood or what? Thanks for any help you can give on this. Deb

melamine is good with heat tape...don't use duct tape as I learned though...it only lasts a month or so.
