new owner having some trouble w/leopard

westonlynne Apr 20, 2006 01:26 PM

We got a pair of baby leucistic leopard geckos a couple months ago. They're out first reptiles. Anyway, when we got them they were aproximately the same size and both seemed healthy, active and hungry. Now it seems like one continues to grow and looks healthy while the other hasn't grown and is looking sickly. They've also gotten more shy about eating in front of us, so it's difficult to make sure that they're both eating. We've been putting more than enough crickets in the tank, evidently, since not all of them get eaten. Should we sepparate them? What can we do to encourage the small one to eat?

any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like some bullying. I've had it happen with my geckos, and separation quickly fixed the feeding problem. So yeah, I'd suggest separating them.

Yes, you should definately seperate them.

Also, how old are they, are they sexable? The reason I ask is they may be 2 males and if they are, you should never put them back together as males will always fight and sometimes to the death.

I agree with the other 2 posts. Separate them right away. You also might want to consider taking the smaller one to a good reptile vet too. Have a fecal float done to check for parasites. If it is ill, it will also stop eating. If certain parasites go untreated, the gecko will die.
