I need a snake room. will this work...?

kirkpatrick Apr 20, 2006 02:40 PM

http://www.bettymills.com/shop/product/view/Duramax/USP01014.html I am planning on buying this to use as a snake room. I will be moving and it is the only way to keep my reptiles. 10' x 15' will hold everything I have now plus some. I keep colubrids (about 80 right now) and some geckos. I live in the central valley so temps in the summer can reach 110-115 but on average 90-100. So I will be using an AC to keep it in the 80s. The building will also get its own breaker. Do you think this will be safe. I may add insulation if needed or even a different type of building. Main thing is I want to keep my reptiles safe.

Also trying to get a building for around $2000 or cheaper. Thats including delivery and it needs the foundation also.

I don't know much about these buildings. I would be concerned with how they will hold up to wind.

Another concern is how you will insulate it. If you end up buiding a 2x4 interior to hold insulation and wiring it might just be easiest to stick build it from the beginning.

I want something that I can disassemble easy to move. I know the wood buildings like these are easy to insulate because they are built with 2x4, but this one is vinyl with steel supports. I found one made of wood but you still have to paint it and shingle the roof. plus that one will cost $2500 and probably not very good to move. I don't think wind will bother it and it will be in the back yard anyway. Shouldn't be much wind and there is shade back there to. My main concern is if it will get to hot when the sun is directly on it. Just incase the ac goes out or the power. I'm not sure how hot the snakes can handle or how hot it would get inside the shed.

If the structure is wind proof and otherwise impervious to the elements (rain, bugs, etc.) then it might work.

I would just line the inside of it with Reflectix insulation. Works very well.

You'll have to check local code about running electric to it.

I live in a farming community of about 1500 people. Code is not a problem.

The website says it is wind proof. Don't know how much wind but wind isn't very bad here. Also it is sealed. You just have to silicone the roof a little and thats it.

Where can I get reflectix? is it like the insulation you put in walls?

If you are are really concerned with the roof causing temps to get high inside you could look into coating the outside of the ceiling with something like a white paint of sorts.
I dont know the situation, but it sucks that you are put into a position like that to have to go thru all this trouble to begin with though.

it comes in an eggshell color so shouldn't attract to much heat. just concerned and wanted to see what everyone else thought. also the situation isn't to bad. hopefully in a year or two i can have more room.

Reflectix is that insulation that looks like bubble wrap covered in aluminum foil. It is a very effective radiant barrier and ideal for this application. I buy it at Lowes.
