Viper-Tailed Geckos.. substrate?

devotchka2589 Apr 20, 2006 04:06 PM

So I now have an empty ten gallon tank w/ UTH already on, and naturally, want to fill it back up again with something. After some research, it seemed like a viper-tailed gecko would be the way to go, since I already had a good portion of the materials needed. Plus, they're really cute. lol

So anyways, I'm wondering, whats the best substrate for these geckos. On all the caresheets I've read, it seems that 50% recommend sand, and the other 50% a different kind of substrate. Then theres the sand/soil combinations. Whats everyone's take on this? It seems that sand would be safe for these geckos, since they come from a desert-like environment, but you can never be sure.

Also, does anyone know of some viper gecko breeders? I've searched all over the place, and have only found one site that is going to soon try breeding viper geckos.

Thanks in advance.

are you talking about carrot tailed viper geckos? i have some and i know where you can get some. i have gotton two from him and they are really healthy. i use all sand cause their poop is so small and if you have woodchips or other stuff you can't sift it out. i've had no problems with impaction... they are 40-60 and if i ask he'll probally get some in within a month. heres a pic of my two, one male, one female.
