Obligatory etiquette thread

LBenton Apr 20, 2006 04:14 PM

This comes up about May / June each year so I thought I would head it off early. Everybody has a standard when field collecting or road collecting for herps. And this is a place to go ahead and get it over with and just be done with it.

For field collecting, I have a few basics.

1 Do not trespass, doing so makes us all look bad.

2 Do not destroy the area. Put rocks back, leave some bark behind etc. Hunt like you plan to come right back.

Not many people will take any issue with what I consider field collecting etiquette, so I will move on to road collecting etiquette.

1 You do not need to stop and talk to every car out there. Most of us Road Cruise for no more than 5 – 6 hours. That leaves a lot of time during to day to chit chat and swap stories. Why not just get together for lunch instead? Do not throw a fit because the other car did not stop every time you wanted them to.

2 If you do stop to talk. Pull off the road and let other collectors go by. I hate pulling up on a pair in the road that spit as soon as I show up forcing me to adjust my rhythm so they could talk. If you loose your place in line deal with it like an adult.

3 Dimming the lights, if somebody flashes you, you waited to long for them. If you are flashing a lot of other cars you are not patient enough. You need to figure a balance out. I do not see a need to dim the lights for people walking in most cases. They should be looking some direction other than right at your headlights anyway.

4 If somebody is walking an area, do not spotlight the side of the road they are on. There is enough room for everybody, no need to make bad JuJu.

5 Fake items… Not a big deal in my book. Sometimes playing around is fun. But keep in check, it is all in fun.

6 I could understand telling a little fib if you found a gravid albino two headed alterna. But for the most part, we all know that the snakes are there, we are all looking for them. Share in the experience, I think you will have a lot more fun. After all we all know everybody, and nobody will get away with anything stupid for long.

I am sure everybody has something that bothers them every year, I know I seem to. So this year I plan to search diligently during the prime hours, and just enjoy myself the whole time. If I am doing something to diminish your experience let me know. Otherwise do not worry about it, and have a good time.

buy property in Terrell & Brewster counties??? Gonna make your own road-cuts?
Ok . . . jus' havin' fun. That land out there can't be too expensive . . . To the average human being it is considered a waste-land. To us of course . . . priceless!!!
Just one questions though: Are the annual taxes more than the value of the land? THANKS, Forky (Was thinking of buying some dirt out there myself one day after I sell my other house in Texas). Take care,

Zee

electric out there then of course water ! My friend that bought property behind Study butte found out it could cost between $10,000 to $20,000 to run electric from the main source. This has been an issue of E-Bay land sales of Brewster and Presideo county in the seller not diverging this to buyers. What a shock one buyer found out that to run electric power to his property will cost him $40,000 to $50,000 from highway 170. This is if you want to build and or live half way comfortable. Sure my friend only paid $18,000 for 162 acres but i can see why ! LOL !

WOW! People actually trespass to get alterna??? What a waste of time in the first place - not to mention getting your shin or feet stuck by some lecheguilla is NEVER much fun!!!

of the coin. attention drawn on number 2 and 3 of the posted road cruising etiquette : a very few don't know this or will be newbies or close to it. Heck, they might not even be reading this due to not having a computer or visit this site. While I know all of this, I still have a problem that urks me when I THINK someone wants me to stop as soooooo many road cruisers slow down as if they ARE going to stop and talk to you or want to talk. What do you do. The urk part that I am relating to is on me for feeling that I am " one rude dude " in their mind/s for not stopping. Some of you have met my friend of the past 4 years with me while I have been down. That is Cowboy Donnie and he is one of the nicest and level headed folks that I have ever known not to mention where he is from everybody in his area waves, greets everybody with Sir or Mame, stops at any vehicle off the curbside and ask if they need assistance, etc. When I tell him of the " etiquette " of road cruising while in west Texas, he cannot understand why people can't just stop even for a brief period to talk. In my years there WAS that period when NO one did stop to talk. Paranoia was abundant due to either everyone was either a game person or a under cover agent for something. I don't know what to say else other than it does put people off of the non-friendliness or what they perceive as such of herp people sometimes. AND not everybody is willing to drive either to point a or b because of mileage and now gas prices. Meaning : if I was staying in Alpine and may or may not considered driving RR , that's a heck of a long drive to talk to someone down at the Wildhorse or vice versa. I know > my 02. cents worth.

Tell it like it is... Folks don't get your feelings hurt if people don't stop. It's not cause you have bad breath or smell bad or don't like you. It is just because it is time to cruise.

Thanks Lance. Good post.

I think you forgot this one. If you have two people in your vehicle and are spotlighting both sides of the road and see someone coming towards you stop spotlighting thier side of the road as soon as you see them. I think everyone pretty much agrees on this. Where I see a gray area is when the people spotlighting both sides are in the middle of a cut when the see the other car. Should they stop mid-cut as soon as they see the other car or should they finish the cut? My take is the second they see the other car they should stop shining the other guys side. What is your take, finish the cut or stop as soon as you see the oncoming car?

And should be turned off for any approaching vehicle.

If the vehicle may be a game wardens vehicle. Otherwise just keep it on the rocks.
