I posted a little below without reply. As I said, I had two little leopard torts that wouldn't open their eyes and I was concerned because they might have been having problems eating. Now, one's dead, ive got one left. When I soak him he will open up his eyes, but as soon as he's out of the water for a little, he'll close them and wont be able to open them again. What do I do?! I don't want to lose this one too. Ive tried misting the enclosure but it doesnt seem to help. suggestions...

I'm no expert, but since nobody else has replied, here it goes.

Have you tried to use humid hide? I have two baby leopard as well and one of them always prefer higher temperature and therefore gets dehydrated easily and have swollen eyes. Now I fixed this problem by simply placing some wet sponges in the enclosure (near where they sleep but not directly on the substrates). The sponges will dry up and shrink in half a day, you can imagine how dehydrated those little guys get.

Hello, swollen shut eyes is sometimes a case of lack of vitamin A. Most pet stores have tortoise eye wash which contains vitamin A among other ingredients. A couple drops in each eye for about a week usually solves the problem. The product I always keep on hand is called Turtle Eye Wash by Zoo Med. You can probably find it online. Good luck

I'm so sorry that one of your torts has died. As the other tort has similar symptoms, I'd get it to a good tort vet as soon as possible.

Rick, Get the other tort to the Vet ASAP. I had a little Leo died just like that. I had a necropsy done and he was full of Parasites and he had Pneumonia( now he had no signs of that except he kept his eyes shut) He opened them when soaked sometimes. I had him two weeks and he died on the thrid week. The Vet said it came that way from the breeder. I am not trying to scare you but a Vet visit is in order. I have had torts since I was 2 yrs old and I am 44 now. And I missed this in my lil Leo. Here is a pic of when he was sick in case it helps. I am so sorry you lost the other one. I know how you feel. But take my advice before its too later. Mine hardly would eat and the day before he died he perked up then I found him dead. Good Luck. Deb

I'd suggest that you have a vet check for protozoa and treat accordingly.

In the mean time it might be a good idea to up the temperature, soak it daily and provide a humid hide. I'd suggest a temperature of 80 F.

Ampicillin injections for 7 days
Fenbendazole and Trimethoprim Sulfa for deworming
and sodium cloride fluids to be injected 2-3 times a day

He's still alive, so we'll see from here.
Ive uped the temp, am soaking him 3 times a day and making food always available. I don't know what else I can do at this point but wait...

Glad to here you got him to the Vet. That sounds right on for a regimen of meds. I am not a Vet but deal with Meds on emergency basis daily in my In Home Emergency Pet Care. If he is not too far into the illness he should pull thru but it will take some time and strick following of the Vets orders. Another important thing is eating. He needs to eat so if he should completely go off food and stay off contact the Vet. There is appetite stimulants that may help. Of course keeping his eyes open and his nose clear of any fluids so he can smell will do wonders. Good Luck with him, and keep us posted. Did he give a diagnosis and a prognosis? This drives me nuts.

If there are obvious signs of worms the deworming is the way to go but I have a suspicion that many vets see a wasting away and think worms because of dogs an cats.

A very big problem with tortoises under one year is protozoa. All the medications mentioned will do nothing against protozoa.

I highly recommend flagyl(metronidozole) because not only does it nail most if not all protozoa but it is also a pretty wide spectrum antibiotic. So, if you (or the vet) is guessing that is the way to go.

the hydration you have covered... watch the temperature... keep it on the warm side.

Trying to keep the fun in Chelonian care

I wanted to let you know that I got flagyl, but the baby died last nite at 9pm despite all medication/treatment.

There is a point where no matter what you do the tortoise is going to die. It can take months but anything you do is hopless.

Sorry you couldn't save the little guy. I'm going through the very same thing myself right now with a couple of tortoises. You have to get lucky with noticeing the problem before the 'too late' point.

Trying to keep the fun in Chelonian care

Rick I am very sad about this but it is true that if the problems is not noticed by us in time( like with my little Leo) no treatment will help. All we can do is try and that is what you did. If you plan to get more torts( I do not know if you own more torts) make sure you get fecals done right away and every 6 months as they grow( some do it every year) then with illnesses, Sometimes signs and symptoms do not appear until the tort is too far into the illness( again like in my case and now like in yours). So what I do to help with that is make sure that the tort never gets a chill has a humid hide and good heat source and the proper food and vitamins/calcium and when ever I first notice going off food I take to the Vet. Sometimes its nothing and sometimes its a illness. The main thing is being safe than sorry. And I have lost many torts before I started this. Unfortunately this happens, My husband says than when a baby tort is sick it will never be the same even if it recovers. Now I do not think that is 100% true but I have noticed to a degree its true. Like its not a good eater or it doesn't grow as well as the others, its not as active. I have noticed that. Again I am so sorry for your loss(on both torts). And I hope you contiune to be a tort owner. They are fasinating creatures. Take care, Deb
