Leucistic rat snakes

xblackheart Apr 21, 2006 12:51 AM

Here are the two new rats that I got on the 8th in San Diego. They are a little nippy, but I love them. Sorry for the blurry pics.

Is that what happened to your index finger? I like the look of the texas rats but refuse to get one no matter how many people say "They aren't nippy!" Good luck with them!

ya, I was going to point out the blood, but not sure if it made it in the picture cropping. The first time I saw these guys, I decided I had to have them. They rattle their tail at me all the time. Most of the time I can pick them up fine, but they have their moods! lol.

I am pretty sure these are not bug eyed. I looked in Junes reptiles magazine and it has a pic of a snake bug eyed on only one side. My little guys look like the side that is not. i think this type of snake in general has the big eyes. They are adorable. Thanks

The snakes pictured are not bug eyed, the bug eye thing is very dramatic, you'd know. Also to the guy who said he wouldn't get one because they were so nippy, mine is the most aggressive snake I've ever dealt with when going in, but once you have them in hand, they are fine. I have a reasonable amount of experience with ratsnakes and have found this to be true, unlike other snakes that can be very unpredictable. They seem to stand their ground until they are picked up, then are fine. May have to do with confidence though, thats the variable that is difficult to quantify. Just get in there, get them up, and walk around. Aggressive snakes always concentrate on movement, so if you're moving they will relax, or at least focus on the fact that they are moving and not on you, then they will realize they are not being eaten and calm down. Good luck, Eric-

Though I haven't had a leucistic Texas rat for long, he hasn't biten me yet or even tried. However, he does bite if picked up by somebody who is nervous. If picked up by somebody calm and determined (basically reach in and pick him up, no hesitating etc) he is quite calm. THough he does squirm a bit in hand.

That was a Yellowtail Cribo. Notice the inner row of teeth when they really bite down.
