help sexing

xblackheart Apr 21, 2006 01:43 AM

I hae a water dragon that I can not get a definite sex of. I have a pic of "her" younger(sitting on the branches) and two taken tonight. They are a bit blurry, but can anyone tell by the neck spikes if it is female or male. I am horrible with time, but I'd say I have had her for a year, so add however old they are normally sold at, in pet stores.
thanks

By just the looks alone, female. But it isnt always the case. You almost always cant tell gender until 2 years of age. What you can do, is lay your dragon on the palm of your hand, its head facing away from you, gently lift the tail and underneath the vent (tail part, not belly part) you will either see one or no bumps, thats female, or two bumps for males. Those are hemopenil buldges. Also, you can look on the inner thighs, darker, more pronounced can identify male, and smaller/less visable whiter bumps are shown for females, these are femoral pores, although that is NOT always the best way of sexing. I would go for the bumps by the vent as a better way of sexing. Females also have rounder tails, while males get more triangular. Females have pear shaped bodies, and of course the big crest and body length spikes for males, with what looks to be more of a "backbone" underneath the spikes on the back.

I would guess female, but you cant know for sure until about 18 mos.
