This poor thing was posted on another forum (boating forum). Am I right that it's a grey rat? It was in some part of Texas (helpful I know but I only know the state).

It is (or was, I should say) a Texas Ratsnake. Totally harmless and very common through most of the state.

I knew what you meant. And I agree, he had absolutely no reason to kill this snake. In fact rat snakes I've encountered in the wild have been very mild mannered. I bet this one didn't even react to his being there until it was too late to get away. sad.
