Three striped mud turtles...

PhunkeyPhish Jul 30, 2003 05:48 AM

Well, because of how the trutle market is right now i might these a trhee striped mud instead of a common musk... These guys get only 5 inches, so about the same in size as the common musks... do they require the same kind of set up also? or are they a bit different than their close relatives? thanks

If anything, three striped muds are SMALLER than common musks. I have found hundreds over the years that appeared to be fully adult, if not old that were only about 3 1/2 inches. This is especially true down in the southern tip of Florida.
They require more land area than a common musk turtle but otherwise their care is the same.

How much more land do they require? The dont spend most of their time just walking under water?

In the wild striped muds are known to wander around quite a bit...especially during rainy weather. It is true though that in captivity they spend most of their time in the water as you say.
But it would be a good idea to provide some 'land' area. In my mud turtle set ups I have an area apx. 1/3 of the total space for egg laying and or basking. I find that many times at night they will be up in dry space.
