What kind of tads?

Velox_415 Apr 21, 2006 01:06 PM

I live in south central Pennsylvannia and I found those guys ^^^ swimming around in the deflated kiddie pool in the backyard. I think they're toad tadpoles, arn't they? Do you think it'd be possible for me to raise a few of them?

This reminds me to ask, there's a lot of woods around and I hear gray tree frogs all the time, where do they lay their eggs? I've never seen any treefrog tads. Or spring peepers for that matter....

Thanks!

they are toad tadpoles, probaly american toad. you can rear them in captivity, but tadpolesare very aggressive feeders and require a constant food supply.

That's cool, it's better than the alternative... next Friday that kiddie pool is going to be dumped. Sadly it's not mine so I've no say in it.

What do you all think would be the best food for them? I've read everything from boiled lettuce and egg yolk to goldfish flakes (atm I only have betta food though). Think a few of them would be okay in a tub of "lucky bamboo" without hurting it too much?

koi pellets, flake goldfish food, spinach leaves, clumps of algae, elodea (anrachis), cabomba, and aphids are all good food sources for tadpoles. if you have a creek near you, try to find some rocks with algae growing on them or clumps of algae and put them in the water with the tadpoles. you can buy cabomba and elodea from most pet stores or water garden centers. if you choose to feed spinach, put one or two small leaves in, but take them out when they start to decompose and replace them. fish food should only be a few flakes/pellets every day and make sure the water doesn't become to cloudy. setting up a tank with a few inches of water and a samll filter is your best bet with tadpoles. if you can get some algae clumps and/or algae rocks and some aquatic plants, then your tadpoles should do fine. you can keep 15-20 tadpoles in a 10 gallon tank filled 3/4 of the way with water if you get algea and plants and a filter.
good luck and feel free to ask more questions
