100% het clown females?????

johnavilla Apr 21, 2006 02:30 PM

Is anyone selling these this season? Since my land lord said it is ok for me to keep a couple as long as I don't breed them I figure that I can get a 100% het female and in three years, by which time I will have moved, she'll be ready for my male 50% and thus in three to five years I get a clown. So I've been keeping an eye out for 100% females but no one seems to have any for sale. Whats up with that?

How do you figure you will have a Clown in three to five years with a 50% possible het male. Why not buy a 100% het male, and multiple poss het females or a het female......skimping on the male is not a good idea, and really not a good idea if you can afford a 100% het female.

I don't disagree with getting the 100% het male. But if he chooses to proove out his 50%er then hes right about the time frame - getting a 100% het female now - even if the male doesn't proove in 2 or 3 years if he holds back the ph male offpring hes bound to hit on one within another year or two. Frankly I'd give it a try (especially if your snake is a pet that you'd like to prove and arent in a hurry) but if the male doesn't hit on the first try - sell all the possible het offspring and buy a 100% het male.

The original post makes it sound like they are expecting a Clown, which is not necessarily the case with a poss het male.

I guess my pint was that if he picks up the 100% het female - then yea even if the possible doesn't prove to be a het - it should take him 5 or 6 years to produce a clown with just the mothers genes.

You should see plenty of them hatching out this season. I suspect with the new clown mixes that came out last year - there was a big push in the clown breeding department this season.

i suspect you'll have a hard time finding someone willing to sell a lone female het. most breeders only sell them as het pairs or het males. rarely do you see them selling lone females.

toshamc Apr 22, 2006 12:07 PM

Really? I've bought three lone females without a problem. Who is only selling them as pairs?

do you ever check the classifieds? i didn't say it couldn't be done but most want to sell them in pairs unless they have a surplus of females. otherwise they would end up with a bunch of leftover males.

The Male 50% that I have is a very loved pet. He is also (some of you may have read posts in which I've mentioned this) the snake that I think may have something special going on with him. Spot on head, light, lots of yellow, more and nicer flames than any proven yellow belly that I have seen... I don't think he is a yellow belly because he doesn't have the granite like edging on his belly but I think the breeder may have accidentilly put a het clown with something special however, until that proves out he's a 50% clown and I am very hopefull. My plan is to breed him to a 100% clown female and keep all of his offspring. If he doesn't prove for clown on the first attempt than I will put a 100% male with her next time around and just to be sure eventually try him on a Homozygous clown just to be sure. I will put mt 50% on his own daughters when they are ready to see if I am right about him having something else going on. Either way 3-5 years is about accurate for a time frame of when I will have a clown. I don't currently own any photo equip but I should be able to get some this summer and I will post some pics of him to see if anyone else thinks he looks unusual or if I am just nuts lol. Thanks for all of your replys.
