maybe now I can get some sleep......

gray Apr 21, 2006 05:15 PM

.....she finally let them go. I have watched for days as Rosy struggled to hold back the growing brood of babies inside her. She did everything but tie her tail in a knot. Wednesday she spent the day cruising and nesting but still decided not to birth them. Yesterday, when I got home from school, my son and I saw the last two babies born at 4:30 pm. My younger son and daughter arrived shortly thereafter from the bus. We all marveled at the babies, most of them were still encased in their birth sacs. The kids kept commenting, "Dad, I think that one is dead". I told them to be patient....and as we watched...one by one....we would see the head of an upside down "dead" snake slowly emerge up through the coils and press its way through to the world. We got to see most of the babies draw their first breath. It was a wonderful, wonderful moment to share with them. This litter was even more meaningful to me because the mother was the first boa I purchased when I began my current collection. "Rosy" was purchased from Jim Peters at the Daytona 2000 show. She also produced a fine litter last year. After the birthing, I got her out and she was as sweet & gentle as ever. I had to congratulate her. She weighed in at 13.0 lbs. Her pre-breeding season weight was 16.0 so she will gain that back by summer. The final tally was 11 Motleys, 10 Normals, and 3 unfertilized. All the babies are in great condition. The Motleys look superb.

On the downer side, I was rushed before school this morning but I wanted to clean the birth fluids that were caked on the babies. I also wanted to clean out the bloody paper in their cage. I moved the babies to a container I use as a baby bathtub. They were incredibly active for their young age. I was turning my head to clean their cage and then turning back to catch one or two escaping from the "bathtub". I finally got the cage clean and took the bathtub down to the sink. I got them rinsed off and brought them back upstairs. I counted them going back in and I was missing a Motley and a normal. Did they escape when I turned my head?! At this point, I am already past the time when I need to leave in order to make the opening bell. Picture me as I'm scambling around the floor on my hands and knees looking for these babies. My kids are calling for me to leave and I'm sweating bullets. (You better not be laughing at me right now!). I don't see any babies and then I remembered that I hastily threw away the bloody newspaper from the cage. I go into the trash and search inside the newspaper and find a Motley buried deep inside. So I started my day by throwing a Motley in the trash. (I said stop laughing!). Searched the rest of the trash and no normal. My son has now joined the search. We couldn't find it. I'm just hoping that in my rush this morning I miscounted.

Ok, if you've read this far then you deserve some photos.

Sounds like a rough day for you, but those are some beautiful motleys. Wish I was able to own one. Good luck with them.

.....important detail. Friday is PICK-UP DAY. That bag of trash was headed directly for the curb....never to be seen again. Scary thought.

LauraV Apr 21, 2006 05:41 PM

I do hope it was just a miscount...
Throwing a motley in the trash...you didn't have to do that, I would gladly have taken it off your hands.
Must admit I had to shove my jaw back into place on that one...it dropped to the floor, don't you know.

....on the miscount theory. Never did get a chance to count them again today. I will be giving them another bath in the morning....hopefully won't lose another one.

..The last baby.. I have had newborns escape on me a few times and always find them on top of a stack of cages.. It's tough to believe the litter guys can get up there but they can...LOL...

Gray,

That is an amazing photo. I know the feeling. Those Motleys are awesome. IS there anything better then a Perfect 10 Motley? I don't think so!!! They are the Best Morph out there. I know everyone would say, I'm biased. I probably am. LOL!!!!!!! I had litter of Hypo Motleys today; quite a bit different story from yours but your weekend is probably good no matter what happens. I told myself I would only post a few litters this year so I'm waiting for a few of my whoppers!!

Remember three years ago when you came up to me at the show when you got your Motley, and you asked me 10 different times. Do you really think this is a Smart move??? With you being a teacher and raising a family, I certainly understood the financial stretch you were making when you purchased your snake. I remember you walking a way with your Motley in hand. You were walking with it like it was your most precious item ever other then your kids. lol Well, with Patience, time, and hard work, look at those babies this year and last. Could there be a better feeling? Excluding my wedding night, kids, and a few other precious moment, It is right up there. LOL

CONGRATS on your litter. I love the passion you have, and the quality of your animals is top notch. All in just 6 years. AMAZING!!!! I love success stories.

Take Care, Jeremy

Gray, you'd be impressed, the site is ALMOST done. And, yes it will be updated WEEKLY with SNAKE news.

.....I do remember the day I was walking through the Daytona show with an $8K cashier's check burning a hole in my pocket. Everyone thought I was crazy including some boa hobbyists in attendance that day. I treated that boy like porcelain china and fed him next to nothing for the first year. Turns out, he is made of steel. Has been a perfect animal from day one. You talked a lot about how strong the line was and only now can I understand and appreciate your comments. Both of my Motley litters have been rock solid animals from the start. The new babies were aggressively exploring their cage within 6 hours of birth.

Looking forward to the web site....better be good after ALL THESE YEARS!

Send me some photos of those hypo Motleys.

Thanks for the introduction into the Motley project. Super animal that I have been privileged to work with.

Thanks to everyone for your support.....sorry I can't reply to all the posts. Today is cleaning day and I can't fall behind. I'm expecting two more litters that could drop at any time.

Update - I didn't miscount. I even went back and counted heads in the photo.....there were definitely 10 normals. Now I have only 9. So one fast little bugger slipped away and is still AWOL. I suspect that he/she will be very active and that we will meet again soon.

skyslinger Apr 22, 2006 03:12 PM

Cary Monday through Friday so... if you need me to start picking up your trash just let me know. LOL Congratulations on the nice motley litter. We should meet sometime. We are practically neighbors.
