Maternal Incubation (Hey, Tosha)

Quinton Apr 21, 2006 10:13 PM

Heard you had a mother who left her eggs. I've got one who did it last Sunday, and I've got two eggs pipping right now. All I did was bump up the humidity and crossed my fingers.

How has your luck been?

I pulled them and put them in the incubator - she was off of them for 6 days and they were starting to look really dehydrated. If they were further along I would have probably just bumped temps but I still have 4 or 5 weeks left!

Glad to hear your are pippin! Be sure to post picts!

ok i know i have almost no experience compared to many others here, but ill throw in my 2 cents.
one of my females laid for the first time this year, she laid 5 eggs but wasnt taking care of them at all,( i was planning on maternal incubationbut with this development i had to act fast)
i took a 11 x 11 piece of flexwatt, screwed it into the top piece of a styrofoam box from a fish wholsale petshop, and set it up like any other incubator. took me about 10 minutes to set up, and i adjusted after the eggs were in.

all 5 eggs are doing very well so if you have concerns about your ignored eggs surviving, you could try this. my method is keeping the humidity at 80% and the thermostat keeps it at a steady 31 celcius. it is very cheap to set up the most expensive part was the thermostat, which s from an old waterbed, and the heat tape.

best of luck

I had a Hovavator on hand just in case - but I was having a hard time maintaining a good temp with the hovabator heating element - so I took some heat rope and wrapped it around a piece of wood and put that on the bottom of the incubator and I'm using that as heat instead of the Hov's heating element - it seems ot be working much better - my eggs are nice and plump now.

Keeping my fingers crossed !!
