Mice to rats in one strike!

mkco79 Apr 22, 2006 02:06 AM

Well not sure how many of you have read my previous posts. The ball i just got was being fed live mice. Tonight i went out and bought him some frozen rats from gourmet rodent i think it is and thawed one out, got it to about 86 degrees. Placed him in his eating bin offered the rat to him
and WHAAM!! I think the feeder was a tad bit big for my ball but he got it down no problem and is fat and happy (as far as i can tell). I was all worked up because i thought it was going to be a struggle to get him switched over but hopefully i wont have to go through all the hoops to get him to eat rats. Snakes fed, owners happy and the world is right!

How did you get it up two the 86Deg. I need to try that one time. Thanks

Rick

Congrats on the switch to rats! We had three mouse eaters that we stopped feeding during breeding season and all three ate rats yesterday. I guess three months without feeding can get them to be a little more open minded. LOL

Congrats!!

It's amazing how much better I sleep when my snakes have a full stomach.

It's not how many snakes you have. It's how happy and healthy you can keep them.

Congrats, I wish my snake would eat a good meal so that I could relax a little. I am happy for you and also jealous

Thanks all! All i did was a rapid defrost i guess you could say. I put the rat in a ziplock then stuck it in the sink and filled the sink up with hot water from the tap. I think i had to top it off a few times with hot water but it only took about 45 moinutes to an hour i think it was and it was totally defrosted and then right before i offered i toped it off again with some hot water just to make sure the rats surface temp was nice and warm.

I was totally worked up about the whole mice/rat situation before i offered him the rat. I was surprised and more then happy when i felt him through the tongs strike it and constrict it tho!
So its not this easy for everyone to convert there snakes? You all think its a miracle that he went from live mice to frozen rats so quick?

I guess maybe I am lucky and since im a newbie with hands-on snake care i just dont know how good I may have it. Does everyone make sure there meals are nice and warm on the surface prior to offering?

Either way I am so stoked and at ease right now!

Good luck to all that are trying to get your balls switched over!

1 of ours took a rat the first time we tried but now wants live mice. Have not tried live rats yet because I don't have any the right size yet. Have to wait tell the next litter.
