Quick question?????

crimsonking Apr 22, 2006 08:21 PM

I've seen a few pines for sale on the classifieds and at shows labeled as "red pines".
What ssp. are they???
When I asked one breeder here in FL I got a different answer each time I questioned him.
First time he said they were southerns (which are not legal to sell in FL) and I guess maybe he thought about it and said they were a cross of FL X northern...
Another guy said pure northern...
So you can see, I'm really confused.
Any help?
Are there several species/ssp. that are being bred and sold as "red pines"?
Thanks.

The ones I've seen have always looked like, and been advertised as, a color phase of northern pines....

Wondering the exact same thing.

Specifically, this one:

Beautiful snake, but not sure what kind of pine it is...

Well, the one in that picture certaily appears to be a Southern. If it's a predominantly blotched animal, it is probably a Northern, if it's patternless, chances are it's a Southern; I've not seen any patterned "red" southerns - they just don't usually have reddish in the background, usually more of a salmon or orangish color, like one we hatched below last year.

when I look at my posted pic, it DOES look more reddish, but it's really more of an orange color in person.

I remember talking to the guy that started the whole thing at the breeders expo in orlando in 95' and they were 400 pr and he said they were pure patternless southerns slectively breed for red...JB

and I don't think the black anteriors on the northern pines can be bred out....

Then you see my concern, right? Still a "normal" mugitus? For sale in FL?
Not me.....
