This message is addressed to you just because you live close. Anyone in Kansas, Oklahoma, or Missouri can answer. My new wc black rat is blue. Based on the weather and time of year would you say this is a post brumation shed or a pre lay shed? I do not think she is gravid but would like to have a nest box in there just in case. Opinions welcome. Thanks! Also, how long after the pre lay shed do they usually lay?

The easy way to tell if they are in the early stages of a shed is look at the white ventral scales and they will have a bluish tint before the eyes blue up. It seems a bit early for the pre egg laying shed. I would expect eggs in June-early July.
