serious boa question

pythonis Apr 23, 2006 04:37 AM

ive noticed that my female red will kind of "flop" around when im getting her out of her tank or when im holding her. what she does is kind of hard to describe. a drunk person upside down on a jungle gym is one way to put it (without the ralphing, of course). anyway, i figured it was just her but now my younger male is starting to do the same thing. if anyone knows what im talking about please let me know if this is normal boa behavior.

hey, i have a pair of redtails and my male does this. what i believe is happening is that they dont feel secure. they feel of balance being picked up and just want a good firm grip and to be supported when held. its very easy to stop them from doing this. you just need to pick your snake up real slow and let him get a hold on you that he feels comfortable with. my female on the other hand just doesnt care. i could hang her by her tail and she'd grip the branch and just hang there. the bottom pic is how i like to hold my boas while standing up. they get to hang onto me yet i'm supporting the majority of thier body.
cheers

well its not a holding issue. im knowledgeable in the field of snake holding but this is different. when i get the female out, she will do as mentioned of course and i secure her asap. however, what she does is she will throw her head and upper body off of me turn it upside down and just sort of "free fall" until the extension of her body she has flung down is even with the rest of her body. then she will just hang there upside down and after a moment she will attempt to right herself. all this is done in a matter of seconds until i can get her secured again. then she will do it all over again after a minute or two.

no just kidding.

i wouldn,t know, but if it is a snake that,s getting handled for the first time or so,,, i should say it,s a time thing untill she will feel secure with handling.
but if she keeps on doing it i would think more of a neurotic thing,

but then again am not n expert on this.

lets hope she will grow out of it

goodluck

If this uncoordinated behavior is only seen when being picked up, it really just seems like 'fear of falling'. I notice not so coordinated behavior in larger snakes that have not been handled much as it is often difficult to support enough of them to make them feel safe.
