Corn snakes everywhere!!!. . .But. . .

BlueKing Apr 23, 2006 09:45 PM

The temps were right, and it just felt right (here in SE. North Carolina). So I hopped into my car yesterday evening and went "corn-cruising" a few miles away. In one hour I spotted six adult cornsnakes and NO copperheads or watersnakes, lol!
But: Bad luck none-the-less! Five out of the six corns were JUST run over by cars and still moving (I HATE that!). Those five were all very pretty males! However, I did manage to get a young 3 footer totally unscathed!!!
Ironically, I found HER about thirty yards from where I found the golden corn 18 months ago (for those of you who remember). The only consolation I have is that the only live one was the female! I'll post some pics of her tomorrow,

ggggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I hate that, I am so jealous. It is so unfair. I live in an area where the best snake I can find in the wild is a garter or gopher.
Its too bad you didn't make it to those snakes a few minutes before. Such a same.

That would be very depressing to see such a wonderful creature killed. I would hate to find my favorite type of snake dead on the road. I'd hate to see any snake ran over, though.

YES, ANY snake is a terrible loss! Yesterday I had to scoot another copperhead off the road so he wouldn't get hit!

LOL! Usually they do (seen it too many times), but this one was smart enough to stay off the road for good!

Thats awesome ! Im originally from Asheboro, NC,. Saw a great number of corns, eastern kings, and canebrakes when I lived there, and spent many summer months. Things are picking up here in Alabama, so far 2 nice corns, one gravid adult about 4 foot, and of course the Rats, and black kings.

BlueKing Apr 24, 2006 09:25 PM

Just wondering, where'd you find most of the Eastern kings at in that area? Thanks,

Zee

My uncle lives right on the ridge behind the NC Zoo, and I usually just road cruise around or lift tin or plastic behind his house, not alot of places to go around there, but tons of snakes, I'll be going back May 27 and staying awhile, maybe get a eastern hog or somthing lol, only seen one there, Do you ever herp around that area? Zach.

BlueKing Apr 25, 2006 09:43 PM

Havn't yet, maybe I'll have to in May? Don't know the area too well, but have been to the zoo a couple of times.

Yeah, great area for kings, and canebrakes mostly, well not including tons of black rats and copperheads..I cant wait to get back up there and search some of my old sites. Thing about NC, when you set out for a night cruise , you expect a corn to be laid out, on the other hand, Alabama, you may find very few a year or none lol.

Nisa Apr 26, 2006 08:31 AM

So it is rarer to see them in Alabama? Not just me? I think I can only remember seeing 3 snake on the road in the last 5yrs or so and 2 in the woods or yard. None of them corns. May have something here that's good at eating snakes. And that thought worries me.

Well, Im in North Alabama, and I see Way more corns in Nc, then here, maybe its just cause im in North Alabama, And not south, though im on the georgia, Tenn, line. Im in one of the best spots though, tons of abandoned chicken houses, old barns, tin sites, out in the country. Im just happy with what I do find.

BlueKing Apr 24, 2006 09:23 PM

Hit the woods! They love wooded areas more than open fields. Pick a warm night (the night before a cold front hits is the best), a road with very little traffic on it that cuts through wooded areas and you'll be in business! Corn snakes should be active starting tomorrow night in your area (in VA). Good luck!

I don't find many snakes of anykind around and about outside. Though I did see one about 3 days ago in the woods. I'm not sure what kind he was though.
