Mexican hogs canibalistic?

herper79 Apr 24, 2006 12:00 AM

Yesterday I looked in my '05 mexican hog cage and the female was trying to eat the male. She has his head in her mouth and blood was comming out from her rear fang puncturing his neck (if a snake has a neck lol) So I grabbed her and she still had a hold of him and dunked her into cold water and she released. i now have them separated. What is wierd is that they are both the same size and both get fed every week separately. I know have them housed saparate, but wow I would have never thought. They are both about 6-7"
Just and FYI any comments?

Wowzers! Maybe he had some of the prey's scent on him? When was the last time they ate?

It had been 5 days after feeding.

This male ate one of his siblings. The one and only time that this has happened to me in 7 years of working with hogs.

You know, I guess it'll take posts like this to drill it home for people. Thanks for posting, and do me a favor and reply to others who insist on keeping their hognoses together.
