"Expert" Opinions (i.e knot subject)

bgexotics Jul 30, 2003 10:06 AM

I am sick of all these message threads in which people fight over how to keep their herps. As far as I am concerned, no one has the perfect answer. There needs to be a lot more research before definate answers can be given about caring for herps. What works for one person does not necessarily work for someone else. I have kept several different types of mammals, fish, and reptiles. I have also worked in pet stores for several years, while working on my animnals science degree. I wasted so much time arguing with people on how to keep pets.

The most important thing to remeber is each animal is an individual!!!

Just because a book tell you something does not make it right, many authors have different opinions. Use them as a guide, but seek other sources of information as well. Personally I like nature guides and researching native habitats. I then try to reproduce that habitat as best as I can.

Just my humble opinion.

I totally agree w/you. I've been keeping & breeding herps for over 10 years, worked at zoo, and have a degree in animal behavior. In all my years I've read and heard conflicting info from various sources. Your best bet is to research all aspects of an animals backround before you keep it. And yes just because one way works for 1 person doesn't mean it will work for others. Let's face it nobody know every aspect of any animal so people should get off their high horse and just chill out. All herp lovers want whats best for their animals, so fighting over who is the "expert" is ridiculous. My 2 cents.

Totally agree. One should be open minded when it comes to caring for your animals. Ok there are some steadfast rules which pretty much should happen over caring for any animal. Like your responsibility to provide fresh food, and water and shelter for the animal, also the right conditions in regards to heat and light.

I know for a fact that I don't do some things that others do for thier frogs and mine are just fine, happy, weighty and croaking.

The only reason I jumped a bit on Knot is because he/she has referred to one article only, a general one, and that is dangerous. As you say, you should read as many articles and books as possible to obtain a broader horizon on how to care for these guys. Don't be so narrow minded and accept the veiws of others and their advice.
