Kansas Herping

dawnrenee2000 Apr 24, 2006 07:51 AM

Had a great herping day yesterday. Was only out for about an hour, but came across alot of activity. It was a new area to go through for us. Lots of piles of Tin from old building and some old barns still up..good flat rocks. We only touched a portion of the property, so next weekend we shall see what else we find! I am sure we will find more kings out there, and we will switch to the wooded area to see if we can find some milksnakes too! yesterday we found;

adult black rat in shed cycle
Sub adult Prairie King snake
5 lined skinks ( gravid female, and several males)
4 Garter Snakes
and Lots of Feild mice..hehe.

BONUS FOR THE DAY! We found in the basement our juvenile Desert king that was bought 6 months ago but got loose that same day. Been gone for 6 months and we actually found it!!! He is tiny but looks and acts very healthy. That was such a cool surprise.

Anyone else get in some good herping this weekend?

i will be doing some feild herping/mountain biking today, i will be accessing a piece of land that is called Horse Gultch, you walk/bike up a ten foot wide, really rocky road and it breaks off and goes one way, into a wooded area, or if you keep going to opens up into a mountain encrusted meadow of sage brush and cacti, i plan on taking my camera with me so if i see anything good i can take a pic, but i will also photo the landscape so i can post that here anyway, well i am off for my day of fun

Looks like nice herpin' territory. What were the temps out that day? I have a couple of field herping areas that I've worked several times before having any success (3 garters and a Cal King, lots of lizards, and a pretty big Western toad). I guess sometimes it's a matter of paying your dues @ certain spots before something cool turns up.

i think the temp was to blame, it was alittle chilly out, i stayed pretty much where the sun was hitting, but it didnt really matter, yeah once it starts getting alittle warmer i will be back in there all the time.
