Siz and Habits of HOGGS??

Hoopy Jul 30, 2003 10:20 AM

Hello,

I have enjoyed the pictures of Hoggs I have seen. I would like to know more about them because I am interested in getting one in the future. How big do females and males get? How are there general eating habits? Are they more nippy then some of there counterparts? Are the reletively easy to breed like other boas? Are there requirements roughly the same as other Boa's from the same family? Sorry for all the questions, but I find them very beutiful and am very interested in them. I am not a newbie, nor am I a pro (just a reptile fanatic). I currently own 3 boas and 20 ball pythons, as well as "other" reptiles. Any answers and some pic of HOGGS would be greatly apprecaited.

Hogs are ussually between 4 and 6 ft with males being a bit smaller than females.

How are there general eating habits?

They have strong appetites and can be fed like any other bci.
They could be fed more or less its really up to you and your hog!

Are they more nippy then some of there counterparts?
People say they are, but from my experience they have the same temperment as any other bci. Most are docile but others will get you.

Are the reletively easy to breed like other boas? Are there requirements roughly the same as other Boa's from the same family?

Yes, their breeding requirements are the same as any BCI.

Good Luck

This girl is old... I don't know exactly how old, but she'sd been around for a while. She came from a breeder who was "done with her", who gave her to a friend, who gave her to me LOL.

Ya some females can get a bit bigger than 6 ft but the majority are under 6 ft. Mark Wendling also used to have a big girl at around 7 ft but sold her too!

I've had Hog Island boas now for about 4 years and despite the other varieties of boas I have (or had over the years) they remain one of my favorite Ssp. Sizes are as have been previously stated, and as shown can get a little bigger in captivity than 'normal' due to the regular, copious diet we boa-keepers tend to give them. Despite reports of them being nippy I've never found that with mine, which have been as docile as any other BCI's. They typically have a very eager feeding response and the few times I've ever had a problem getting "tagged" was when it was dinner time and I got 'in the way'!!! LOL Get one Hoppy, you won't regret it!!!

regarding temperament. A few months back, I bought two (unrelated) Hogg females and they are the most mellow girls around. I don't think either one was a "pet" before coming to live with me, however when I handle them, they seem even more relaxed than my other BCI's. They have been a joy!!
