Incredible Weekend in TX (North Houston)

TammyIs5150 Apr 24, 2006 10:29 AM

Over the weekend I found (sorry I don't know the scientific names) 1 buttermilk racer, 3 yellow bellied racers, 1 baby rat snake, 1 baby garter, 5 copperheads, an assortment of skinks and frogs, 1 box turtle hatchling, 1 mexican(?) box turtle. If anyone is interested in a GREAT GREAT place to herp in the North Houston area send me an e-mail. I don't think too many people know of this area because I never see anyone doing any herping around here just a few people on ATVs. The herps are endless here. In fact most of the above mentioned snakes were found in our yard.

Are you sure absolutely sure that what you saw was Thamnophis sirtalis and not Thamnophis proximus ? I've been herping this area for a number of years and have seen 8 dor sirtalis all off of a single road in Brazoria county. They are not very common in south east Texas to say the least. Your sirtalis would be a pretty significant find if that is indeed what you found. Your box turtle is either a Three Toed or an Ornate. If you have pics of the Thamnophis, could you either post them or send them to me ?
