Egg hatching probelm, help please!

crotaphytusman Apr 24, 2006 12:15 PM

I have not been on for a LONG TIME but I need some help again this year, as my female is gravid again. I would like some advice on how to care for some coming collard eggs (Crotaphytus Collaris). Last year I had 5 clutches that yielded nothing. Both my female and male will be about 2 years old. I had my incubator set at around 80 - 86 degrees with the eggs set in a 1:1 water to vermiculite ratio. The first clutch was so close to hatching, after looking at them when I knew they did not make it, they where fully developed but for whatever reason did not make it. I don’t know if it makes much of a difference but, it was her first gravid year and she was young (about 7-10 months old). I was wondering if anyone has any feedback on how you set your eggs. Do you have better results when you put them as they are laid or with the pink spot up? I have been putting them pink spot up in the vermiculite. Any feedback would be great. I am hoping it’s just because it was her first year and this year will be better. Thanks ahead of time!

eggs are just a pain in the rear.

i haven't hatched many but when i did hatch them, it was pink spot up on all of them, compared the the many failed hatchings of laying them as the mom did.

i don't really have much else to tell ya, you have the temps and everything down.

Hi, just hang in htere and keep trying. Pink side up is the way they should go if ya see the pink oval. If not just try and lay the way you find it. Many of us have had them form inside the egg only to NOT hatch or/ die before, and it is always kind of sad and frustrating.

If layed wrong or moved they can drown. Keep trying they will hatch.

Also don't get the vermiculite too wet. damp enough to clump it but not dripping wet. I usually keep temps about 84

Best wishes with those eggs

I would like to thank you for all the feedback! I will give it another go and report back when I have some new little ones running around (I'm going to be optimistic about it). Thanks again!
