Southern hognose breeders???

repzoo44 Apr 24, 2006 02:33 PM

Is anyone working with southerns? I know they are more difficult but will we be seeing any in the future that are cbb and eating mice? Thanks for playing.

Southerns are actually easier than Easterns, they are just not as common in captivity nor in the wild. I live in N Florida most of my life, and have seen wild Easterns aplenty, but have never seen a Southern. I know they are here, they are just in small numbers. i myself would love to start a breeding project with them, it is just a matter of finding some.....

A friend and employee of mine has an 05 cb trio that all feed ravenously on mouse fuzzies. From what I hear from breeders they are easier to get on mice than easterns!

I have a female that has laid her eggs outside the nest box the last two years in a row!! And she always chose to lay them on a weekend that I was at a show, so when I got home they were already dried up. This year, her whole box will be a nest box, so unless she escapes, she will be laying some good ones this year.
They will switch over to mice, but it takes a little work. that is part of the reason for their higher price. If they are really cheap, then they are probably still eating toads or toad scented pinks.
Contact me if you are interested....

Thanks for responding. How does their personality compare to that of the westerns? Are cbb southerns able to be kept in captivity just as easily as westerns? I like the look of southerns and wouldnt mind getting some one day. Thanks.

Once they are eating mice they are fine, good looking little critters! Not that easy to convert to mice though, i bought 4 and managed to get 2 to eat mice, which are now doing really well, i would def recommend them if you can get hold of them.

Yeah, I like their looks a lot too. I would really like to get some if I can find some for the right price as money is always an issue while in school. But hopefully in the next couple of years more and more will be cbb. Thanks.

I have a southern collection of 12 cbb animals. 2.2 are adults and have bred. Another 2.3 will be ready to go next year. Stay tuned to the forum for any news on eggs.

I have several pairs breeding now and hope to see the first eggs in about 2 weeks. I should be able to provide completely unrelated pairs this year. Last year was my first time producing them and they are indeed very much easier to switch to mice than Easterns.
