Question about raising mealworms

spiderchick Apr 24, 2006 02:59 PM

I've just started a mealworm colony and have tons of pupas. So many that I'm running out of good size mealworms to feed! anyway, can anyone tell me about what is the best condition to keep the pupas in? I've heard between paper towels so the beetles have something to grasp when they emerge. Heat? Light? And how long does this stage last? I've heard 2-3 weeks and I've heard 9 months. Is there anything I can do to speed up this stage?
Thanks!

I just set up a tub just like the mealworms are in and put the pupae in it. When they morph into beetles they will need apple or carrots for moisture or they will feed on the other pupae. They will lay their eggs in the bran and you will have a nice colony with patience.

They will be beetles in a week or two at the most. Keep at the same temps as the worms, not too warm, not cool.

Awesome, thanks! Do they prefer light, or darkness?

I keep mine in translucent bins with opaque tops. So I guess they get some faint light. I don't think that they need light though, I would keep them in a covered tub that gets some air.

Watch for spiders. They love mealworms and will nest around them if you let them. I use a 3 drawer cart for my colony and just broke it down and hosed about a dozen spiders and probably at least that many egg sacks out of the legs and frame. EEEAAAAKKKKK!!
