Keeping Humidity up in a Screen Cage...

matthew Apr 24, 2006 04:16 PM

as the title implies, i have a screen cage for my jacksons cham. obviously keeping the humidity high in this cage is impossible unless the room's humidity is as high as is needed by the cham. i have been spraying him/her down like 4 times a day. is this enough?

if not i can move the cham into a glass cage aside from a screen top. but i heard chams need a screen cage, is this true?

thanks for the help

i know that jax need higher humidity than veield and panthers so I cannot be specific, but I can tell you what has worked for me. I have a shower curtain liner on the back and sides of the cage - cheap, easy and attached with small cable ties. I then use a humidifier/pvc pipe setup on a timer for added humidity. I live in NH and the winter is bryutally dry. In the summer I would use the a/c on very hot/humid days (critters are in my home office and I cannot bear the heat) but even with the a/c I did not have near the issue as in winter.

Lots of live plants will help increase and maintain humidity - stuff them in there and mist thoroughly.

Hvae an outdoor cage for sunning in summer and hose it down (with cham inside).

Winter, a weekly shower will help, too.
Do you live in the north?

See these two articles on chamnews. and I included some pics of my setup.

Lele, who is the owner of the most 'sophisticated' vivariums in the thread above?

the photos in the post are of my old setup for Luna and I will be using it for Cyrus once he gets in his big cgae (tomorrow).

simple, cheap, effective.

How did you connect the pvc pipe to your humidifier? I would like to use your ingenious setup for Lucutis. My humidifier has a fan-type top, would I need to get some sort of bucket thing to funnel the humidity into the pipe?

Depending on how large the "fan like thing" is, maybe you could connect some air conditioning duct material around it and attach the other end to the cage mesh. I think most of us try to find humidifiers that have a smaller spout that releases the fog. These spouts often take a 2 inch pvc water pipe perfectly.

There are variations on this design that have been around for some years. You may have also heard it called a "Johnson fogger" after Doug Johnson of an older cham forum. The great thing about it is you can expand it to reach several cages in a row by adding lengths of pipe. I have a length of pipe all the way across my cages with holes drilled every few inches so the fog pours a bit more evenly and efficiently. The holes have to be large, at least 1/2 inch. This and a programmable lamp timer to control the humidifier cycles works really well.

I like clear vinyl shower curtains myself, as they are a bit less obvious and let more light from the room into the cage. The curtains protect walls and furniture around the cage from spray and increase the wetted surface and evaporation after spraying too.

Ideas ...

Also think about covering a side or two of the cage with plastic.
