Gravid female?

sir-pent Apr 24, 2006 06:42 PM

I think I may have a gravid female gopher snake. I noticed today that she seems to be gaining girth in the last third of her body. Is there a way to know for sure? Is it the right time for this now?

I assume that she will lay some eggs soon - can you suggest an online resource to tell me how to proceed?

These are gorgeous Applegate SD gophers - I'd like to see what the offspring will look like.

I know there are several resources (pit page, etc) but which one do you think I should consult in order to maximize my chances of success?

Thanks for any help you can provide...

Hey Landon - we need more info. Did you cool her down? When did you bring her out? When did you put her with a male? Did you observe copulation or notice copulatory signs? If you did/noticed these things she should lay 2 or 3 days after her next shed. Put cypress mulch in her enclosure, moisten it and add some hide structures over the mulch and good luck.

also-i have had snakes lay good eggs without a pre-lay shed,so i would suggest not waiting for the shed...for egg boxes i like a gladware/etc. conatiner with a hole in the top, filled with sphagnum moss wet then wrung out so no water drips out when squeezed...you may need a shoebox sized conatainer for a good sized pituophis...good luck, keep us posted
