Question about young leopards

Drako32186 May 19, 2003 04:37 PM

I have recently bought 3 new, adolecent leopard geckos and one, the smallest, sits still alot more than the other 2. They're also cooler and i haven't seen them on the heat rock very much. I'm worried that she is sick, but I'm new with geckos and I don't know if that is normal or what. I wonder if they need to spend more time on the rock and how I can get them to stay on it, or will they if they need it?

I was also wondering whether or not they like water.

Thanks,

-Drako

Don't use hotrocks. Reptiles don't have the nerve endings we have so they can literally char themselves before they realize they're too hot. They could be getting too hot, or even burning on it.

Click the link below and read a lot and evaluate their enclosure, heating, lighting, substrate, hides, feeding, etc.

Then, come back and ask for help, if you still need it. Right now there's so much it could be that reviewing your setup will probably fix the problem.

Good luck.

They tend to develop hot spots, and will burn your geckos. Also, how is the rest of the cage set up? I suggest evaluating your set up, and reading some care sheets, as well as purchasing "The Leopard Gecko manual". Research should really have been done prior to getting the geckos, but it isn't too late to fix the problems.

actually, I have the Leopard Gecko Manual, and it states that a hot rock would be a good choice.
But I wouldnt use one period...go with a heatpad under the tank, or a basking light.
Hot rocks are just no good.
Good luck with your new babies, theyre lots of fun

Like the others said, get rid of the heat rock ASAP. Under Tank Heaters are alot better and cost about the same. I recomend you get a copy of The Leopard Gecko Manual. If you follow everything in that book, your likely to have healthy geckos.
Good Luck With Your Geckos,

I agree with the others....hot rocks are very dangerous and can cause severe thermal burns. You are much better off buying a nice reptile heat mat and a rheostat. The pad won't burn your pet (since it is on the other side of the glass) and the temp can be controlled with the rheostat. They probably aren't doing too well because of the stresses of moving, poor temperatures, and not enough hiding spaces. Leos do like water so keep a shallow bowl of fresh water available at all times.
